Name that tune

The ultimate tune query thread. Instead of starting a new thread for each mystery tune post your appeals for information here.

I'll be first up,

is driving me bonkers. I know it, I have a recording of it, but can I find it?

I'm sure it's on Anglo or English International but perhaps I'm wrong?

It's strong, it's sexy and I want to play it, but if I don't know the name of the tune I can't find the dots.

Help!

Before I saw the answer I gave it a try in Tunepal, mentioned in this post. I just recorded the sound of the YouTube video. The gold Ring was number 9 in the list of possible answers. Not bad, I'd say.

This opened up a can of worms. I spotted the comment about The Gold Ring on youtube Leo and went off to JC's Tunefinder to get the dots. What I got was the tune Chris has posted the abc for above which isn't the same tune at all but Kate MacNamara plays it on Anglo International. This caused me to ignore a tune of the same name played on English International by Henrik Muller which was a pity because that was the tune I was after.

When you posted the link to the other youtube clip (with the bamboo wotsit) which again called it The Gold Ring I went searching again and found this page at the Session. Here there are three tunes (although two are quite similar) called The Gold Ring. The top one has most of the tune I was looking for but has only six parts not seven. The similar sounding tune (third on the list) has only five parts, the last of which turned out to be the bit that was missing!

If only the Tunefinder thread had started before this one Leonard. :D

There in another mystery about this tune. The piper in the youtube clip plays the beginning of the fifth part of the tune in the same way as the dots are written in the Session ABC file:

BDB BDB | ADA ADA | BDB BDB | ADA ADA

The lad with the bamboo wotsit (which is fascinating btw) and Henrik Muller both open this section with:

DBB DBB | DAA DAA | DBB DBB | DAA DAA

I wonder if that's just an odd coincidence ... <_<

Hi Pete

I came across a number of different versions, including:

Fidddlers Companion

http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/GNE_GONN.htm#GOLD_RING_[1]

O'Neill's Music of Ireland It has 7 parts.

http://www.oldmusicproject.com/subpage/Onj2.html

JC's ABC Tune Finder

http://ecf-guest.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/tunef...tune&Nsel=0

These three seem to have the best guess, although there are a bunch more.

Variations of the same tune?

Thanks

Leo

PS the bamboo whatsis came from an old thread on an origin of the concertina. I'm just glad they invented bellows. Coincidence??

Well, even then, Pete .... Such a machine, as clever as it is, can't replace the personal discussions you started with this thread. :)
