Anglo-Irishman Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Here For any one in Germany who might be interested. Unfortunately, seller is adament he won't ship outside of Germany Good luck. MC Thanks, Being eligible by domicile, I've bookmarked it! The description says something about "Blood and Fire" inscribed on it - so it could be an old Sally Army Ab/Eb. Ebayers are a funny lot. Search for "concertina", and, apart from ladies' underwear, photo wallets and barbed wire, you get accordions, Bandoneons, flutinas and music boxes offered. And here's a fine example of a classic concertina which I missed because he calls it a "bandoneon"! Cheers, John
spindizzy Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Here For any one in Germany who might be interested. Unfortunately, seller is adament he won't ship outside of Germany Good luck. MC Hmmm.. I have a few colleagues in Germany - I'm sure they'd be happy to act as a recipient for me. Lucky it's not an EC or I'd really be tempted.
Stephen Chambers Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 could be a lachenal too ... I doubt it, seeing that it has George Jones' fretwork and 26-key layout, as well as bearing the Salvation Army crest. He supplied them with lots of Anglos just like it, when he had the contract. The Lachenal ones are scarcer and always have 30 keys and metal ends, with the letters SA cut into the oval cartouche in the RH end (and no crest). They only came later, after Jones' business closed down, and by that time Salvationists were already starting to use other systems. ... does it have steel reeds. I expect they'll be Jones' Broad Steel Reeds ("Never wear out. Never go out of tune"), at least I don't remember seeing a Salvation Army one like it that didn't...
conzertino Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Sometines ( rarely though ) it pays to be German... Ì'll have a go at it and let you know
Anglo-Irishman Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Here For any one in Germany who might be interested. Unfortunately, seller is adament he won't ship outside of Germany Good luck. MC could be a lachenal too, does it have steel reeds. Reporting back... I'm in Germany, so the seller answered my e-mail promptly. Unfortunately, he's one of those absolutely clueless sellers. Didn't know and couldn't find out what key it's in, whether it's in tune, whether it has wheezy notes or gurgling reeds or leaking bellows. All the additional information I got was a photo of each end and one of the extended bellows, which looked quite nice, FWIW. He did invite me round to try it out, but he's about 500 km away! If Stephen Chambers is right about Jones reeds "never going out of tune" (or was that tongue in cheek, Stephen?) there's still the question whether it's at A=440 or an older pitch. And the S.A. connotation would indicate that it's in Ab/Eb, which is not up my street as a folkie, even if it was at A=440. So although I enjoy the undoubted priveledge of living in Germany, and do play Anglo, I think I'll just let this one pass. I would leave this to a restorer. Question is, how many concertina restorers search Ebay for "Bandoneons"? Cheers, John
Stephen Chambers Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 If Stephen Chambers is right about Jones reeds "never going out of tune" (or was that tongue in cheek, Stephen?) John, I was simply quoting George Jones' advertising slogan: "Never wear out. Never go out of tune." That's why I put it in quotation marks (and don't expect me to guarantee it)... ... there's still the question whether it's at A=440 or an older pitch. I don't know what the story was with their bands in Germany, but in Britain the Salvation Army continued to manufacture brass instruments in "High Pitch" until 1964, so it's quite likely to be in that tuning. And the S.A. connotation would indicate that it's in Ab/Eb, which is not up my street as a folkie, even if it was at A=440. It's quite a popular key with Irish musicians, and it should easily convert to G/D, but don't expect it to have a fast response. Question is, how many concertina restorers search Ebay for "Bandoneons"? Well, this one does!
