We're still uncommon, I guess.

I went to a great concert this evening at the ecotarium in Worcester, Massachusetts - part of the 'Jazz At Sunset' series - Nathan & The Zydeco Cha Chas (superb accordion, etc). It was amazing.

Man (former trumpet player) sitting near me: 'Do you play an instrument?'

Me: 'Yeah, I play the accordion. But I also play the concertina.'

Man: 'A WHAT?'

????

We need to be heard from more...at least in central Massachusetts. Heheh!

define 'normal' ;)

"normal" = "right"

Right-angled, that is. :P

However, this online thesaurus has various non-mathematical definitions and synonyms, including "common", "usual", "prevalent", "sane", "right". "wholesome", "average", and "unexceptional". I guess it depends on the context, including who is using it.

When you go to a festival or workshop weekend, (and the more specialised it is the worse the effect,) it can be hard to return from that delightful bubble of like-minded "normality" to what most people seem to regard as "normal!" :D

I find the most useful response to "...it's a what?" is to say: "yeah...it's an accordian with Peccadilloes ."

Is that anything like a charango, the Andean instrument that looks something like a ukelele but is made from the shell of an armadillo? :D

Funny, that's just what a Texas concertina is -- a live, crinkled-up armadillo. It is a little squeaky, though.

Wish I'd thought of that!

I think I'll keep a pic of a concertina with me from now on - that might help.

I noticed this effect on returning to Normal Avenue, Normal, Illinois, from Pinewoods camp. I was at the English-Scottish dance week. There was another English concertina player in the band class. Great fun.

The town got its name from the Illinois State Normal University (now called Illinois State University), which has had the education of teachers as its main mission since 1857.

If "Unexceptional" is considered normal, maybe I am. :) ..I think. ...Nawwww, not a chance. :(

Just pretend your moving the bellows back and forth with your hands in the air.

that seems to end all further inquiry.

Hmm! That's exactly what I did. I'm not sure if the man knew what I meant but at that point it was getting too noisy around us to talk much. (...Excuse to buy a concertina T-shirt or pin.)

I have a pic of both my squeezeboxes and a short 'video' of me playing on my mobile so I can demonstrate what it is.
