Is there any reason to use an escrow service when purchasing a new instrument from a well-established maker?

I'd also be interested in hearing other tips on executing an international purchase. I'm in the U.S. and am buying from abroad. Thanks.

If you trust the maker, I see no reason to use an escrow service.

Escrow is great (if slow), however, for an international transaction with an unknown seller. Some years ago I bought a concertina from South Africa this way (used escrow.com, at the time they were fine if slow, don't know about currently).

If I had to choose between trusting a well-established concertina maker and trusting an escrow service that I found through a web search, I'd trust the concertina maker.

So would I. Remember you have one sanction whatever method of payment you choose. In the (unlikely) case of a maker mucking you about, you can always present the facts here. A savvy maker will recognise that a bad reputation on c.net will materially affect their sales.
