How do you define 'Scottische' and 'Hop Step' rythms ? Do you see them as one and the same ? Rod Rod - The basic steps for a French Scottische is two side steps left , two side steps back (4 bars) and then spin for the (4 bars) .The spin is done with straight legs almost as if they were broken and in splints. Some dancers prefer it fairly fast others a bit slower. For dancing a little bit slower than I am playing it. Please remember that French dancers mainly keep their feet low to the ground, slightly smoother playing is required (as I am playing it) The step hop has been explained before, but it is as written A step then hop on that foot, then step with the other foot and hop on that.Once again some like it played fast with small steps and others like it slower with high hops and slightly more lift to the music (on the hop step) ,this is more British style with feet much higher off the ground .Now I have explained the dance steps see what you think. Do I see them as one and the same? As a tune it can be played for either dance. I have just danced both to my playing so the answer is yes. With a slight modification of speed to suit tastes and lift to the step hop as discussed. Al

Alan Day Posted February 14, 2009 Author Posted February 14, 2009 Very nice Al but scottische or Schottische? Chris Well spotted Chris this spelling has always fooled me so before I posted the initial posting I took the spelling from our Rosbif Album printed as "Scottische" following your posting I have just checked Mel's spelling in his Massif Tune Book no1 and it is spelt "Schottische". Mel is always right so the first one must be a printing error. Rod I bet you looked up an old thread on Hop Steps and Step Hops. I have always called it a Hop step, but most thought it should be Step Hop. Did someone get you a big wooden spoon for Xmas? Al
Alan Day Posted February 14, 2009 Author Posted February 14, 2009 The download count is interesting,I have wondered in the past how accurate this is.My first listen to see if I had posted the correct tune did not register as it sometimes does. Do members just look to see what I have written or have a listen at the same time.I can understand the viewing for later discussion and not listening, or I suppose it is possible for a part download to see if it is worth listening to all of it. Al
Leonard Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 The download count is interesting,I have wondered in the past how accurate this is.My first listen to see if I had posted the correct tune did not register as it sometimes does..... I suppose it did register, but it didn't show. You were still watching the screen as it was before you downloaded the MP3. Go to another page and then come back (or refresh the current page) to see the most recent number of downloads. Do members just look to see what I have written or have a listen at the same time.I can understand the viewing for later discussion and not listening, or I suppose it is possible for a part download to see if it is worth listening to all of it. Alan, to give you an impression: Yesterday, when I viewed this topic, I downloaded the MP3 as well. I listened to your tune (and enjoyed it!) while viewing other topics. Today, viewing the topic again to see new reactions, I downloaded the music another time, in order to understand your explanation about the dancing. And then I downloaded once again, to check the download counter. So 3 of the 37 downloads are mine. And the amount of topic views at this moment: 132, of which 4 are mine....

Thanks Leonard, very interesting how these things work and many thanks for saying you enjoyed it. It is nice to get feed back when you post these tunes or information, just to know if in general you are going in the right direction or just wasting your time. Just a bit of encouragement makes it worth while. Al
LDT Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I just listened to it. Very nice. If you prefer it in waltz format (48 bars) I think you have my email...I'd love to hear it.
