Current makes of concertina

Recommended Posts

It is reassuring that new concertina-reeded Haydens are available, and from more than one maker, even if only with a long wait. They do say that patience is a virtue. I have had three concertinas made for me (all Anglos, from three different makers) and my shortest wait was four years.

I'm in a similar position: I make Haydens, but my waiting list is very long and I receive new order inquiries far more often than I can build them. (I'm a solo maker and don't want to take on employees.)

Sorry to have overlooked you, Alex. I knew I must have been missing someone but wasn’t thinking fast enough.

This question might get more responses in a new thread/topic of its own.

Welcome to C.net!

Another member has posted that Jugen Suttner has stopped production (although his website does not say the same).  If so, it seems that newly made concertina-reed  instruments are becoming difficult to acquire with most makers either having a closed wait-list, or having quit production.

Indeed. I have noticed a significant uptick in sales inquiries in the past six months or so (and my waiting list is not getting any shorter). I believe the shortage is currently worst for Duets; at least there is a handful of Anglo makers, and in my experience there isn't much demand for new English concertinas.

Hi, I am currently looking for a "traditional" style concertina with concertina reeds and was looking through the list here and noticed a few are no longer taking orders.

  • Carroll Concertinas has a note saying they're still making concertinas but not taking orders, selling them as built and limited stock.
  • Chris Ghent has a note saying the site is now a "legacy site" although it makes no mention of whether he's still building or not
  • Holden website mentions that they are no longer accepting orders
  • Seven Mount website mentions that they are no longer accepting orders
  • Suttner I've heard the rumors but as mentioned above there's no mention on the website of stopping.

FYI, here's the post from Mike Acott that says Suttner is no longer making concertinas

And continuing further, I have now heard from someone who told me that two people have told him that Suttner is retiring, has stopped taking new orders, and will stop making when he has completed his current order book.
