I don't know how many C.net members might have met Roger Wheble, who sadly died, yesterday, after a long battle against cancer.

I first met Roger when I joined the North Wood Morris Men at the end of 1982. Roger was a regular dancer, and occasional Anglo player with the team. He also played (various instruments) and sang in an off-shoot from the team.

Roger and his wife (Gillian) moved to Basingstoke in the mid 1980's and they were founder-members of Basingstoke Clog Morris. Roger was Squire of the team. I recall seeing the team dance at the Whitchurch (Hampshire) Folk Festival of 1988 where Roger handed me his pride and joy; a brand new Dickinson Wheatstone (G/D), and I took much joy in playing a short tune before I needed to hand it back for Roger to play. He later told me that certain team members were looking on enviously, since they were not even allowed to touch it!

I've not seen Roger for many years, although we did swap a few e-mails a couple of years ago. Roger will be sadly missed by those who knew him.

I'm very sad to hear that news.

I met Roger and Gill last summer in the St Chartier Festival in centre of France.

We spent an afternoon together playing and discussing about concertinas and other instruments

(his french was excellent). We sympathised and have exchanged a few e-mails since then.

He seemed in good health at that moment and I had not imagined he was suffering such a disease.

I confirm that his Dickinson was a remarkable instrument ; at that time he was considering

bringing it to Colin Dipper (which I also met there) for minor repairments.

Hi David,

I first heard the news in February 2007.

Regards,

Peter.
