Mark Evans Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 (edited) This petition was forwarded to me by a colleague on the New England Bluegrass Web ring. Could be worth a click. Maybe Quincy Jones will have a little pull with the 44th President of the United State. http://www.PetitionOnline.com/esnyc/ Secretary of Culture...yes, concertinas are "cultural" even accordions. Come on fellow Amerikaners, wadaya say? Edited January 14, 2009 by Mark Evans

Maybe Quincy Jones will have a little pull with the 44th President of the United State. http://www.PetitionOnline.com/esnyc/ Secretary of Culture...yes, concertinas are "cultural" even accordions. Come on fellow Amerikaners, wadaya say? US is not Europe. Ministry of Culture comes from existence of State sponsored institutions, like theatre, ballet, centrally located and sponsored art schools. It is past down from overlords entertaining themselves, so they needed a manager to supervise all this activity, so it comes second. With the absence of such activity in the US, what would new Minister supervise? Especially now, when we have such budget surplus. Err, did I say "surplus"? I meant "slurpus".
Robert Booth Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Hmmm... I wonder what said Secretary would do? What exactly would be the long range goals of such a department? What artistic efforts would be included and what left behind? Who decides? How to avoid the "museum band " effect? Mark, Do you or your friend have more details about this? Interesting idea; sadly I, too, doubt that money would be allocated for this. Rob
Leo Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Sounds like from the tone of an interview last December that Mr. Jones is trying to apply for or create a nonexistent job. A little too self serving. And he didn't sign his own petition. It's been out since November. http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?esnyc There are already two federally funded organizations – the the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities, whose directors are appointed by the President. I don't think we need new cabinet position created to do an unspecified, undefined who knows what. I'm not in favor of it. No thanks Leo
NoNaYet Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Thanks, I'll pass, I suspect you won't find promoting culture as a government responsibility anywhere in the constitution. Just cut my taxes a couple grand and let me keep my own money. I'll work out my own issues on culture. Robert Booth Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Question is: if a cultural element does not independently perpetuate itself, is it still useful to the culture? Should it be allowed to die a natural death?
Robert Booth Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 But aren't Wall Street and culture oxymoronic?
yankeeclipper Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Ah! So the D.C. buffoons who have led us into senseless wars and spent us into financial oblivion will have the power to define what is and is not culture?
David Barnert Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I already signed it. Also the one to give Pete Seeger the Nobel Peace Prize.
