I'm in the same boat as you. I've had my Rochelle for... should be three months now, and I'm out-growing it. It's a wonderful instrument, and I'm going to keep it for wild nights where I won't want to risk a more expensive instrument. It feels like time to move on, and I'm not yet prepared to pay upwards $3,000 for one.

Any advice on what to get around the $1,200 price range? And preferably an instrument that is actually better than the Rochelle, not just a more fancy name.

Thankful for all advice!

Best regards

Gusten

Happy New Year to you!

I was in a similar boat with wanting to upgrade. I ended up waiting a bit longer and saved up to buy a new concertina from Frank Edgley as it came available at the right time for me. I would have purchased a Tedrow, Morse, Norman, etc... if they were available when I had the funds. All are great, quality instruments and frequently are sold used on this forum.

I had been looking for a while, but don't recall seeing anything in the $1200 USD range. You can possibly get a great used instrument for $1500 USD or so, but if something comes available in that range you'll need to move quick since they are highly desired.

That's one of the interesting things about concertinas, in that the instruments you really want cost more than you may have planned on spending. In the end, the extra money spent is a solid investment even though it may take longer to save than originally thought.

Depending on the type of music you play there are some nice instruments in the $1100. to $1800. range.

26b instruments will afford the notes to play 90% of Irish tunes. I have a good playing, reconditioned 26b C/G Jones available for $1100. + shipping.

This one has some minor cosmetic blemishes but is a solid instrument with rebound bellows and a new end bolt system replacing the typical Jones wood screws. Most Jones have a warm sound and reasonably quick reeds and riveted action. Not the creme de la creme of anglos but when properly set up certainly will not hold back an intermediate player. They generally come with bigger buttons. Chris Algar of Barleycorn concertinas occasionally has similar instruments available at a good price.

The hybrids as we have come to call accordion reed concertinas made by contemporary craftsman are incredible values! Edgely, Norman, Marcus, Tedrow,

Herrington, Morse; just take your pick. They are very well made. Used ones appear on this forum and on ebay in the $1500-$1800. range.

Concertinas are not cheap. The Rochelle is a great choice for a relatively inexpensive starter instrument. When it comes time to upgrade it takes a little searching to find a good affordable, intermediate instrument. It is imprtant to find one that is well made and trouble free with a maker or repairperson who will stand behind their work.

Good advice from a seasoned pro. Thank you.

Still looking for an upgrade to my Rochelle, around $1,000-1,200 (and upwards $1,500 if I happen to fall in love with it).

Another possible source for a concertina: http://concertina.free.fr/annonces.html

No, it doesn't mean it's a free concertina, and it's gone by now, most likely, but you can find the right instrument, with a little patience. All you needed to do, Gusten, is sell $500.00 worth of your mother's jewelry, and there ya go !

Heh, now that would have been tempting. I would have to go home to my ex-girlfriend's house an reclaim some jewelry to sell, I wonder if she'd let me...

Thanks for the advice on the page though, is it updated regularly with new ads? Good thing I took some french classes in high school.
