bellowbelle Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 I've yet to correct my sound files -- shall do so. But, I'm wondering -- why do most people seem to prefer MP3s over WAV files? My WAV files don't have the gaps in them than my MP3 files do. (Though, I think I can manage to get some good MP3s.) Is there any real reason, among those of you who may be more informed about computer recording than I am, why WAVs aren't as popular? Just wondering....
David Barnert Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 But, I'm wondering -- why do most people seem to prefer MP3s over WAV files? MP3s are compressed, and take up much less disk space, take less time to download.
bellowbelle Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 MP3s are compressed, and take up much less disk space, take less time to download. Thanks, Dave. I did have a few MP3s that ended up with more KB than the WAVs they were converted from, but, I'm not sure what happened, there! Something happened in the conversion, I guess. I have software for making either a direct MP3 or for converting a WAV file to one. One nice thing about WAV is that I have software for editing out sections...have seen the same for MP3, but, would have to drop another $20. or so for it, so....hmm, I'll either have to perform perfectly when I record, or...whatever!
Michael Reid Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Wendy, The free Audacity sound editor can edit WAVs and MP3s. It's available in both Windows and Mac flavors.

bellowbelle Posted January 21, 2005 Posted January 21, 2005 The free Audacity sound editor can edit WAVs and MP3s. It's available in both Windows and Mac flavors. -- Thanks, Michael! That's great, I'll give it a try. Well why not do all the editing in the wav format and only convert to MP3 when you are happy with the result? -- That'll be my next 'experiment,' Morgana, to see if I can do that and get an MP3 with no gaps in it after I upload it to my Yahoo! site. I've been intending to see if there's a difference in final results between something recorded as an MP3 first (not converted) and something recorded as a WAV (then converted). My daughter's been home from college on her winter break, and since we dropped her 'under-21-driver' car insurance until she regularly uses a car (or, turns 21), I've been driving her a few places and have been busy with things -- or, have just plain been kicked off the computer while she uses it (I don't want a laptop, etc.) -- SOOOO....after I've returned her to school, I'll lose myself in cyberspace once more and get to those recordings!!
bellowbelle Posted January 27, 2005 Posted January 27, 2005 (edited) Update on my media maze explorations... I just fixed 'The Frog Pond' (or, Frog Pond Prog, etc....whatever). I recorded it directly as an MP3 with no conversion from WAV. Also, it's longer version than the first copy, and has an added B and C parts (though, the file size is smaller, I think). The file name remains the same, so that the link(s) to it are just fine, no need to change them. I did notice that, while this version is froggier, they are certainly COLD frogs. But, we are in the middle of a freeze here, so...they're croaking a bit, I guess! (I can hear a bit of low rumble, from the concertina, at times.) Also, there's a split-second blip of vocal noise (talk) at the end, but, for now...no big deal. Maybe I'll get a better copy sometime, still. (There is a vocal melody, too, but I didn't include it.) As for AUDACITY -- So far, I couldn't get it to work on my computer. I probably just don't understand enough about either our computer (Windows XP) or about something else. As for editing WAV files first and then converting, to see if that fixes holes -- I have yet to try that again. Anyway, making some progress...I think...? Edited January 27, 2005 by bellowbelle

Combined with the fact that the new version is 18% longer (in time) and the quality is almost the same (for my tiny laptop loudspeaker and my not so young ears) I would certainly call that PROGRESS
Henk van Aalten Posted January 27, 2005 Posted January 27, 2005 Due to some new tunes the Recorded Tunes Link Page has been updated and checked: Two great tunes of Mark Evans are added Two of my tunes are added All links are OK While surfing around through the various contributions, I am impressed by the wide variety of tunes and playing styles. It is really fun to see this page grow and grow
Henk van Aalten Posted January 29, 2005 Posted January 29, 2005 All links are OK Errrr - not Quendale Bay! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Danny, As you react on a quote of my previous message, I feel that I possibly should react myself... but I have not the faintest idea what your reaction means. So I simply react by asking you: How's life in Coburg? Already found some concertina contacts in Germany?
Mark Evans Posted January 29, 2005 Posted January 29, 2005 Good morning Henk, I was piqued by Danny's "grr" and tried to enable Howard's Quenland Bay link, but it would not work. The Morris tune did nicely. Maybe something's amiss with the URL address provided to you. By the way, Howards playing on the Morris tune is graceful and classy...Bravo! I wanted to hear his Quenland Bay and am now a bit Crabby .

I really thought that it could be a variant on "e-Bay". I fact there was no link at all for that tune (although it looked like). I think I need a CTRL-ALT-DELETE for my brains . The page has been repaired now, but to be sure that you listen to this great tune (one of my favorites), you can use this direct link here. Edited January 29, 2005 by Henk van Aalten
Mark Evans Posted January 29, 2005 Posted January 29, 2005 Oh Henk, what a delight! Brought a tear to my eye. Very nice recording. I'm no longer Crabby but now have this odd urge to idulge in some seafood!

JimLucas Posted January 29, 2005 Posted January 29, 2005 I'm only a "link collector" <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Don't overdo it. If you collect too many links, we'll have to stop commenting... because it's illegal to send chain letters! If you print out all our "letters", could you sew or paste them together to make a suit of chain mail?
Howard Mitchell Posted January 30, 2005 Posted January 30, 2005 Well, thank you all for your unexpected comments. I've added three more tunes to my web page which will, I hope, meet with your approval. http://www.hgmitchell.plus.com/hgm/nancy.mp3 http://www.hgmitchell.plus.com/hgm/watermanshornpipe.mp3 http://www.hgmitchell.plus.com/hgm/tourneeatrois.mp3 Howard Mitchell
