Miniature Concertinas. Are there, or have there ever been any acknowledged virtuosos of the miniature concertina ? Was it originally aimed at any particular niche market ? Are there miniature Anglos ?

There are small sized anglo's (for example 12 cm across flats), but they are much bigger than this one.

Miniatures seem to have been quite popular with Music Hall artists, for "Party Pieces". Although there are quite a few of these instruments still in existance, I only ever recall seeing one being played by Peter Honri. I'm talking about the "true miniatures", the same size as this one.

 

By the way ...... on "English International", Tommy Elliott is featured playing a miniature on one track.

 

I'm guessing that Wheatsone miniature Anglos were much rarer than Wheatstone Englishes. I seem to recall seeing one Anglo maybe 20 years ago. I owned a miniature English for 6 months back in 1992/3. Because it is held by the thumb and third and fourth fingers, and I had "buggered" wrist tendons as a result of an accident, I was in a lot of pain if I tried to play it for more than a couple of minutes. Luckily, I knew someone who needed one, so I did not have to advertise it for sale.

This seems strange; you'd have thought that where internal space was at a premium an Anglo layout would give it more range without penalty and that would therefore be the commoner type. What have I missed?

I'm guessing that it's all to do with keyboard layout.

 

English 12 key is the common one, although ones with slightly more keys were made. Range would be just over an octave with a couple of sharp notes. What you are doing is taking a very small section of the keyboard, but retaining the button spacing, and note relationship from a larger instrument.

 

I've attached a photo of the one which I owned. For size comparison, an "old" 50p piece (larger than the current coinage) was included in the photo.

Yes, Peter, my first thought when I saw it on Ebay and noted the gold finish and the date of manufacture was......could this have been made for a certain Alf Edwards, a baby brother to the full size English he purchased the same year, with ends painted gold also? I am sure Stephen will be interested.

Thanks for the information Peter. When I visited Crabbs back in the mid 1970's they sent me on my way with an illustrated price list on which they were offering miniatures. I never gave a miniature serious consideration and sadly I can no longer find the list they gave me. I expect Geoff Crabb would have interesting things to say about their miniatures ?

Thanks Leo for your response to my enquiries. So Miniatures Anglos are certainly on offer and it would be interesting to discover how well they are selling. There is something fascinating about anything in miniature but these are certainly not toys.
