Ptarmigan Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 Thinking of English Concertina players in Ireland, I was just wondering how many. or how few, there really are? I know, of course, of Dick Miles, way down in the deep south & now myself on the North Coast, & another very good player, Jo, up here in the Glens of Antrim, but I'm just wondering how many more there are in between. Do any other members here play EC & live in Ireland or does anyone here know of any other EC players over here? Cheers Dick
michael sam wild Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 I live in Sheffield not Ireland but come from an Irish family. I play Irish music on Anglo, bacause I came to it via mouth organ and melodeon . I reckon the English concertina is just as good if you can work it out, and they are now a lot cheaper now the Anglos have gone through the roof.!!! Just off to get that Wheatstone out of the box. There are a lot of great EC players out there. When I read all the notes about changing reeds to facilitate chromatic playing etc I wonder why try to modify the Anglo, why not take up the English? It's a bit like the argument about the melodeon versus the B/C accordion. If you want the punch of the diatonic box go for it but if you want smoothery get the smooth box. I bought a Jones fully chromatic Anglo then wondered why. Still grappling with the question Time for a good, informed, debate. Mike
Simon H Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 Once again your question has the potential albeit small for misinterpretation, do you mean (I'm sure you do) players of English Concertinas in Ireland? Or do you mean concertina players hailing from England living in Ireland? Seem to remember your Scotland question was worded similarly.

Mike Aye Mike, I agree, I don't believe you can say one is better than another. Personally, I prefer playing most of my Irish Music on my Anglo, for that built in rhythm. However, I find tunes like Slow Airs, Planxtys etc can sound much more effective on an English Concertina. I also prefer playing Scottish tunes on my English. But hey, that's just me & probably mostly because over the years, my ears have grown used to hearing Anglos playing Irish & English Concertinas playing Scottish. Cheers Dick

I think that perhaps your looking for problems, where they don't exist, Simon. I would have thought my phrase: .. Do any other members here play EC & live in Ireland? .. made it clear what I was asking. The way I read that, Nationality doesn't come into that question at all. Cheers Dick
Chris Drinkwater Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Perhaps the redoutable Stephen Chambers will add his name to the list. Stephen? Chris

Ptarmigan Posted November 29, 2008 Author Posted November 29, 2008 Toiresa Breathnach? Why do I get the feeling I'm missing something here?
Dirge Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Erm, well actually you've now got Dick Miles in twice; and who's to say that's not good value? Teresa Breathsnatch caused us a lot of fun at one point; Dick had been barred from Cnet and 'created' her...people twigged after a bit and eventually it all ended in amusing chaos. I'm sure I'm not the only one who remembers the lady with great affection. Dick Miles, well done on being big enough to tell the joke against yourself! Dick Ptarmigan: perhaps you'd better take Toiresa off your list!

No, on second thoughts, I've just pictured Dick in a floral summer frock ................... & those hob nailed boots of his!
