46 now ... who'd have thunk it?

Thanks to great Glasgow Dulcimer & Concertina player Jack Bethel, we can now add a few more names to the list.

Always room for another name though, so if you know of another player up there, please let me know.

Cheers

Dick

Thanks to Guran, I have just been able to add another name to the above list, the late ~ David Haxton.

Does anyone else here remember this Glasgow musician?

Cheers

Dick

Hi, Dick,

David is mentioned at length in Stuart Eydmann's "The Life and Times of the Concertina", available here

I purchased from David my first serious English, an Aeola 48 key treble, back in the early 1980s (1982??) from an ad in Exchange & Mart. He was still actively playing and also undertaking repairs back then, though I was somewhat disappointed with his plastic Hohner type valves that he proudly told me he had fitted himself. A beautiful concertina otherwise.

David sent me a photo of a miniature he had built himself, which I shall try to find and post here. He also sent me several cassettes of his playing, mainly chapel music. I listened to some of it a while ago with a view to digitizing it for Alan's English International compilation, but the quality had become poor and I put the project on the back burner. (Now I know a little more about the process, I may revisit the project!)

Cheers,

Malcolm

Hi Dick do any of them sing and play at the same time?( see other thread)

Mike

Sadly Mike, I am not in touch with most of them and judging by my wee Scottish Forum, they're either not a very chatty bunch, or they're just not into Forums.

Either way, I have no idea, but I know Steve Turner did a Folk Club gig in Edinburgh last week and even he didn't get a full house, so I suspect Singing & Playing at the same time may not have quite caught on yet, north of the great divide! ;)

Cheers

Dick

Mike

Of the players listed, I think that these were better known for their singing, and would use concertina for song accompaniment.

Archie Fisher (I've only ever heard him sing with guitar)

Pete Heywood (mainly a singer)

Erland Voy (mainly played fiddle with The Clutha, but played concertina for a song on their LP)

Duncan McLennan (singer from Inverness)

Geordie McIntyre (sings with Alison McMorland)

Jim Reid (I've heard Jim accompany himself on concertina, but usually it was guitar)

and from those no longer with us

Peter Hall (singer with the Gaugers, used concertina as part of the group's instrumental accompaniment)

Roy Williamson (used concertina on the occasional Corries song)

Archie Frame (I'm not sure - Archie usually sang unaccompanied)

Iain MacKintosh (again I'm not sure - Iain usually accompanied his songs on the banjo, but he did have a concertina instrumental on one of his LPs)

Good job David.

Looking back over the list, I think we can also safely say that:

Hamish Bayne sang & hopefully still sings with his.

Norman Chalmers sings with his, with the Bairns.

I know John Gahagan sings, so would be surprised if he didn't sing with his.

I'm sure Brian McNeill also sings with his.

It certainly would be interesting to know if any others do too. ;)

Cheers

Dick
