I just heard back from Scottish Folk Singer Enoch Kent in Canada.

Enoch said that his father played an English concertina in what he called the last of the concertina bands in Glasgow.

His name was Joseph Kent.

So that's one more name for the list.

Cheers

With so many English concertina players who play Scottish music in Scotland on the list, how come Simon Thoumire is the only representative on English International? Is it because the rest are simply not sufficiently well-known for Al to have known about them to choose one or two more. Is it because no other player on the list is of good enough playing standard to be included, or perhaps Al ran out of space to include more tracks? It seems a shame.

Chris, perhaps all the others are actually much BETTER than Simon, but they just didn't wish to show him up!

But seriously, looking down that list I see a few well know names, like Norman Chalmers & Stuart Eydmann, who we know, could have added very interesting tracks to E. I.

So I reckon he just didn't have enough space for any more.

Maybe this list will encourage someone to put together a compilation of Scottish players playing Scottish Music. ;)

In any case, I've had a little more feedback so the list now looks like this:

Sadly, Iain Mackintosh died just over two years ago.

I believe Roy Williamson (of the Corries duo) also died some years ago

John, that is true, sadly. :(

Roy Williamson

OK, I can see I'll need to make a sub-group of those influential Scottish players who are sadly no longer with us.

Dick,

Not sure that Ewan MacColl himself played concertina, though certainly used concertina accompaniment from both Peggy Seeger and Alf Edwards on albums and in performance.

And he wasn't actually Scottish, though his parents I believe were.

I do agree, however, that he is "not to be forgotten",

Going off topic a bit (but what's new?), I was in North Wales back in May 2008, staying in the same B&B as Ian Lynn (musician and film-maker - see Google).

Ian was filming a series of railway documentaries for the UK Channel 4. I was up there to film (for YouTube!!!) the Ffestiniog Railway, he was there to do "proper" filming of the Welsh Highland. By chance, I got talking to him on the one breakfast time when we were both there! We talked about filming, music, concertinas etc. (his friend/assistant was interested in Folk music). The subject of Alf Edwards' concertina came up (the one that Stephen now has), and Ian said that they were re-making some of the Radio Ballads, and would be recording Peggy Seeger. Don't know where Peggy lives, nowadays, but Ewan/Peggy used to live about 6 miles from me.

Peter.

Interesting, I added his name after someone mentioned it, on another forum.

Perhaps someone else here will confirm either way?

Anyway, I'll leave his name on for now, until I learn more.

Meanwhile, I have picked up two more names, so the list looks like this now:

And also, in pedant mode, to confirm Malcolm's belief, Ewan MacColl was born James (Jimmie) Henry Miller in Broughton, Salford, Lancashire in England, to Scottish parents, William and Betsy Miller. For more information on Ewan and his fascinating life, click here. One saturday evening, way back in late October 1989, I went with my then girlfriend to see and hear Ewan performing solo at Finsbury Library, London. When we arrived, there was a note on the door sadly informing us that he was ill and had been admitted to hospital and his performance had been cancelled. We went to another folk club instead and I remember standing up during the interval and announcing that I had just learned that Ewan was gravely ill in hospital. He died the following day, October 22nd, never to sing again. :(

I note now that the list has become "Scottish players of the English concertina" whereas the thread Title is

"English Concertina Players Who Play Scottish Music, In Scotland?, "

There is some creeping potential confusion here. I am English, live in Scotland this last 20 years, play english concertina, play Scottish music. Seems now I and a few others shouldn't be on the list as now titled !

Perhaps "People who play english concertina in Scotland might work..."

Aye, thanks Simon, that's a good point.

To change that title will also sort out the thorny issue of names like Dave Richardson & Nigel Jelks, to name but two, who have lived in Scotland for so long, they may even think of themselves as Scottish, but I doubt it.

After all, I've lived in Ireland, off & on now for over 22 years, but I will always think of myself as Scottish.

So the change suits me fine, cause the main issue for me anyway is who is actually playing & promoting the English Concertina in Scotland today.

Of course it doesn't matter a jot where they were born.

How's this:

noting the name Ian Munro on the list, I am assuming it is the same Ian Munro I know based in Kilmarnock, though I am open to correction on that point. If I am correct in the identification, Ian is an English exile playing some scottish music among lots of other stuff - on an ANGLO!
