pickinduck
Hello I'm new here I mostly play mandolin and a little pennywhistle. I just got a black IOLITE 20 button 40 reed anglo concertina. The mandolin & pennywhistle mainly do melody and I wanted something for chords and accompanyment. Did I pick the right instrument in choosing a concertina? I also love sea shantys and a concertina makes them killer

I'm curious, what shanties do you prefer?

Drunken Sailor Blow the man down The Fishes Whiskey O Yo Ho Ho Quare Bungle Rye The Admiral and the Enlisted Men The list goes on and on. I love Billy Bones by Skip Henderson. Chris Timson
Some of those songs I would classify as forebitters or mainhatch songs, many of which do suit concertina rather well. Probably better to leave true shanties unaccompnied and get a good crowd to join in the choruses. Welcome to the forum! Chris

Even the Popey and Gilligan's Island themes work for me. Is Sailpipe a shanty or just something to tie your fingers into knots with? Same question applies to Washerwoman. Oh and Cap'n Quint (From JAWS) wouldn't like it if you didn't play Spanish Ladies. OOps! I guess that's just a catfish.
Anglo-Irishman
Hello I'm new here I mostly play mandolin and a little pennywhistle. I just got a black IOLITE 20 button 40 reed anglo concertina. The mandolin & pennywhistle mainly do melody and I wanted something for chords and accompanyment. Did I pick the right instrument in choosing a concertina? I also love sea shantys and a concertina makes them killer Hi, pickinduck, Welcome to the forum! Nice to greet someone else who plays "mandolin and a little penny whistle". I play a few other instruments as well, including the Anglo concertina - and I sing. Yes, the Anglo is good for accomanying or - even more useful sometimes - leading singing. I also have quite a few nautical songs in my repertoire, both accompaniments and fully harmonised instrumentals. I play a 30-button Anglo these days, but a lot of the tunes work just as well on the 20 buttons that I started out with. Admiral Benbow, Rolling Home, Greenland Whalers, Leave her Johnny, Tom Bowling, Leaving of Liverpool (best on a 30-button), A-Roving ... all good Anglo tunes. One of the list members, Dan Worrel, published a paper on "The Concertina at Sea", showing that the concertina-playing sailor was NOT an invention of Walt Disney, and that most sea-going concertinas, at least in the forepeak, would have been cheap, 20-button Anglos. And, as has been pointed out, that shanties were usually unaccompanied. Call 'em sea songs, and you'll be OK! You're authentically equipped, anyway And have fun! Cheers, John
pickinduck
When it comes to sea shantys I use the broad definition of the term. Technically the theme from LOVE BOAT is a sea shanty Shiver My Timbers from Muppets Treasure Island is one of the best I just got the book Mel Bay's Deluxe Concertina Book By Frank J. Converse. Is this a good book to start learning on?
