Here's a variation set to get your teeth into, keep the tempo steady or the semiquavers will be a nightmare! Happy Christmas to one and all.

This has to be the tune of the year in this thread! Thanks to Steve Mansfield for the ABC. Hear Anahata knock out a flawless rendition here.

Thanks for the transcription. It is a wonderful tune and not really that bad once you get the basic rhythms in your head. Of course, I hear it as 7+7+4+7/8 rather than 7+7+11/8 :P For those interested in trying, the trick is to count the little patterns. The sevens are always ONE two three ONE two ONE two, and the eleven is ONE two ONE two ONE two three ONE two ONE two. So the complete pattern is

ONE two three ONE two ONE two, ONE two three ONE two ONE two, ONE two ONE two ONE two three ONE two ONE two Which repeats through the entire piece.

IF you say the patterns quickly at a steady speed you'll find the groove. We poor western Europeans just don't think that way.....

Actually (as I said in the Facebook conversation with Peter) I, by contrast, find the way into these complex rhythms is #not# to count.

Trust the note lengths and groupings you see in front of you, play what you see, and the rhythm (for me) becomes apparent - you can then apply that to the rest of the tune without counting, just going with what's already in your head. Maybe I've just been hanging around complex rhythms too long and some part of my brain is tuned in to them.

Different approaches, same outcome. I've started having a go at this one myself and may stick a Soundcloud take up once I'm happy with it ...

This is not really Something for the Weekend, more like Something for the Summer! I came across a link to an abc file that is a transcription of a book that is absolutely packed with wonderful tunes. Almost all of the content is entirely new to me and I'm excited by it! Forgive me if everyone else in the world already knows about this little treasure. The link allows you to download the abc file, a PDF or both. I wondered about giving this its' own thread . . .

Ah, that's possibly the source then as the link was in a private group on Facebook that has one or two 'tina players other than myself in it. If that's your Dropbox link then thank you very much, it's a great file!

Pete.

I've just updated my website - I've given it a new look and feel, and more importantly, I've uploaded a new tune file.

The great American folk musician L E McCullough has agreed for my site to host the abc file of 160 of the tunes he's composed down the years; great tunes, and some of them also glory in great titles!

I'd also like to put the collected abc file of all the tunes that have been posted to this thread up there, which currently totals a splendid 145 tunes: is everyone (particularly Peter, as you've done most of the heavy lifting) OK with that? Let me know either on here or by PM.

I believe the song is "Oh Dear, what can the Matter be, Johnny's So long at the Fair. Parodied in the US as "Oh Dear What Can the Matter, Seven Old Ladies got Locked in the Lavatory, They were there from Monday to Saturday, Nobody Knew They Were There
