O'Regan's--Montreal Tunebook and ABC Translator

....so Tallship, yes the ORegans worked perfectly to get the ABCs back to dots. And thank-you for redirecting me to the site. I hadn't been there for over a year--it sort of just slid out of sight. Lots of great stuff there: those 3/2 hornpipes and 7/8 tunes.! I think I've got a weekend's worth of entertianment....

Here's a funny little tune I've just discovered as I was transcribing another collection for the Village Music Project. Some of the morris musicians may want to grab this and adapt it for an existing dance or better yet write a new dance!

A discussion started in a Tune of the Month thread reminded me of a transcription I did last year from Danny Chapman's hand written arrangement of the Playford tune Mr Beveridge's Maggot. I'm not sure if I've ever posted it on the forum so here it is. Well beyond my standard of playing but still fun to noodle around with and learn a thing or two from.

This is good fun without being too long or complex as a variation set, it takes you a short way up into the dusty end to sharpen up your ledger line reading too.

Interesting Pete,

Living in what was once heavily German and Scandinavian Minnesota I know that as "Ach du Liber Augustin," or as the kids song "Did you ever see a lassie." Titles sure are interesting...and confusing.

There had been a discussion of that particular song last year.

BTW, in my mind it is linked with Trachtenkapelle & Volksmusik, thus I kind of dislike it...

However I have overcome such feelings in the past once or twice B)

This one may raise a few eyebrows! Don't know where it comes from, has anyone heard of the composer? I think he must have been a related to Robin Dunn and Nigel Chippindale!

Looks like we come at it the same way. But despite the title of the discussion you sent me to that discussion is about "Nos Galen" aka "Deck The Halls" and not actually about the tune I was referring to at all. There might have been a different discussion, though I didn't search...

Thanks for the info David although I'm blessed if I can find out anything about him or anything else he may have written. <_<

Well now, time for another tune methinks! This one will try out the skills of the very best players although it's very playable by anyone if the speed is kept down. It is intended to be played at a fair old lick it has to be said, and here it is played by the composer, Danny Chapman who pretty comprehensively cans the idea that Irish style can't be played on an English concertina. One of my current favourites is Anthony Robb's lovely slow air 'Lament for Ian Dickson', which I learned a few years ago from a music book. Someone recently mentioned that there was

. I was delighted to find that I had the interpretation and timing spot on but surprised that my tempo, although slow and graceful in my opinion, was noticeably faster than the almost dirge like tempo of the original. I'm so used to playing it at a faster speed now that I'll probably stick with it for no better reason than that I like it that way.

Here's a tune that's new to me, The Miller of Perth. Listen to it being played very well here by Boldwood and check out more tunes on their Soundcloud page.

Here's a Belgian schottische from the wonderful band Naragonia.

I learnt this at Toon Van Mierlo's music workshop last Sunday at the Sheffield Eurosession before the splendid evening bal with Naragonia, and a fairly lo-fi recording of the workshopped result is at http://soundcloud.com/sfmans/de-hemel-in-sheffield with yours truly leading off over a base of droning fiddles ...

Well played Steve! Naragonia are simply stunning, I think Ill have to stump for the tune book and a few CDs. Glad you liked the tune Wolf, I think I'll be buying the Boldwood CD too . . .

The tune book is well worth it - and the latest CD, Batiska, is the first one with substantial input from the quartet version of the band and is just lovely.

Here's a great tune that I transcribed today from a book that was published in 1740. There is an extremely similar version of this tune in Playford so it may already be quite well known to you but not to me.
