Nothing too tricky about this one, but a cracking tune I've just come back to ...

maybe we should move this this set of posts into a new thread about ABC notation!

Well I like to think I'm not normally a pedant about straying off topic, but it seems to me that this subject is interesting enough to be in a topic in its' own right.

But I checked Jack's ABC and mine without the offending Z: field and neither played right in Tune-O-tron... I still wonder about an error there.....

While not technically against the rules, there are a couple of things in the abc that stretch things to the point where it might be reasonably misinterpreted by the software. I removed the backslash and line break after the A section 1st ending, so the 2nd ending followed on the same line and the Tune-o-Tron player got through that barrier OK, but played the B section as if there were no 1st and 2nd ending markings, that is, it played everything (in the B section) up to the repeat twice and then it played the 2nd ending. Moving things around so that the 1st and 2nd endings didn't start in the middle of a measure didn't fix that problem. Getting rid of the line breaks in the middle of the unusually long 1st and 2nd endings also did not solve the problem, but I suspect it has something to do with the length of the 1st ending.

Interesting. My version does not have the line break issue nor the backslash. Tune-O-Tron plays the A section fine and then skips directly to the second ending of the B section which it plays one time and then it stops.

maybe we should move this this set of posts into a new thread about ABC notation!

NO problem here with that. The issue was with the posted tune, and none of us seems to have solved that. I hope someone in the Tune-O-Tron world is checking things out....

I doubt it will get worked out. Nobody in charge here (Paul or Ken) is an abc software geek. The code that runs the tune-o-tron converter was written +/- 15 years ago elsewhere and appropriated for use here. It's somebody else's program.

Some versions of abc2midi have a bug in their interpretation of repeat constructs. The standard makes no comment on this, but it's been usual in transcriptions of traditional music (since the 18th century) to omit open-repeat signs at the start of a line. Saves clutter. So if you have a tune that goes

X:1

T:test

M:4/4

L:1/4

K:C

A:|

B:|

you would expect it to sound as "AABB" - which is what you get with BarFly, the program I use. I think some versions of abc2midi produce AABAB instead, which nobody could intend by that notation. If you change the ABC to

X:1

T:test

M:4/4

K:C

A::

B:|

or

X:1

T:test

M:4/4

K:C

A:|

|:B:|

it will work as intended.

It is possible to fix abc2midi so it works right - it's open source and has been done - but the implementor already knows about this bug and isn't willing to fix it in the released base version.

And here's what A Northern Lass, sounds like on concertina, courtesy of Mary Humphries and Anahata.

Chris

Thanks for ABC Tallship (I am still getting a note, courtesy of nosey Google about what you are watching on youtube.....)

Chris' find gives it personality and has set me off searching for the words, as Mary and Anahata

make it sound like a nice, paced piece to sing.

The lyrics allegedly here but not popping up yet (though I see our John Offord from The George popping up all over the place.

Indeed so, and I have to confess to ABC'ing the PDF files listed by Anahata. I have no regrets though, great tune well played and generously shared!

I'm just in the process of transferring some tunes I know on the concertina to the melodeon. :o That's reminded me what stonking tune the Sportsman's Hornpipe is. No dotted rhythms here please, play it straight and keep the tempo steady. :)

Every once in a while a stunning tune comes along and I think Washington Square Park is one such. Here's a youtube video that starts at the end of the A music so wait for it to come around to the top again -

I had to transcribe this tune this evening to pass along to another player. All of the accidental G sharps were shown with the sharp symbol in brackets (#) which I've not seen before except as a reminder to novice musicians that an accidental was cancelled by the last bar line. Does it mean the accidentals are optional at the players discretion? Anyway here it is and I think it's a little cracker (with the accidentals in)!

And a suitable one (for the UK) since I'll be home all weekend

(My trip across to the snowy hills of north wales to give a basketry workshop has just been cancelled and so I can stay home and practice or try and use up several baskets worth of prepared willow before it goes off and has to be scrapped)
