Paul Read
I'm surprised no one has picked up on this instrument. I checked with the owner and it's still up for sale. Compared with current Jeffries prices I'd have thought it was a steal. My understanding is that the top rung of the concertina world includes Dickinson Wheatstones alongside Dippers, Jeffries and Linotas. In the most popular keys too. rmerris
I found the serial number for your Dickinson Wheatstone to be intriguing. I had thought that, after assuming ownership of Wheatstone, Stephen had a new serial number sequence, starting with "1". In fact, at one time, I owned a Dickinson Wheatstone numbered "51", which was prominently displayed on the instrument. The last Anglo serial number in the Wheatstone ledgers is No. 59498 (entered on 10/12/74). [The last English system was No. 37083 (6/1/74).] It doesn't seem likely that Stephen made 647 instruments (647 = 60145 - 59498) before making No 60146. Stephen Chambers
It seems Steve started at 60,000. That's what he told me when I bought one of his first Anglos off him, in December 1978, which had a low 60000 series number. Edited to correct date, but I still can't find the serial number... PeterT
Indeed so, and my Dickinson/Wheatstone was 60055, as I recall. Lovely instrument, lovely. Croydonian pedant here. Actually, it was number 60041, according to my records. Wouldn't want the current owner to get confused, would we? Regards, Peter.
