Marien Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 When preparing videos for up- and downloading I want to minimize the file size. What is the best free or public domain software for converting AVI to MPEG? Thanks.
Leo Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 (edited) Hey Marien If you're talking about Youtube videos, they convert them for you. Add &fmt=18 to the address bar for one, and let it buffer. Once it's finished buffering (before finished playing), then go to the temp directory it should be there as an MP4. Copy it where you want and rename it something like "Monkeybusiness.mp4". Should be about 10.8MB size. Hows that for free and easy. Here's an example with the added letters and numbers: Thanks Leo Edited March 26, 2008 by Leo
Marien Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 Thanks Leo, I tried your walk through but I felt a bit Wallyish when I failed to find an MP4 file. I am using flashplayer 9,0,115,0. I´ve put the youtube (flashplayer option) max. file storage to unlimited, do I have to do more to have it buffered? I waited until the clip was loaded. Then I pressed "pause" to prevent it from ending the tune and discarding the file. I checked several TEMP folders (in the root and in the windows folder) but there was no MP4 document. Maybe it is related to the windows version? I am using XP professional. Is there something I missed? Thanks, Marien
Leo Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Remember the post "How to Save Videos". In Internet explorer, on the top toobar on the right: Tools, then "internet options", browsing history, settings, view files, Should look something like this: http://ehkcpr.vp.video.l.google.com/videop...ver=2&rdc=1 And an icon for MP4 on the left, depending on the player for mp4. I use real player, so there is a real player icon. Also I deleted the temp files, and history and sorted by size to put it towards the top. There are about 15 different temp files on my computer, some hidden (but not any more) and some dedicated to different programs. Flash player is for "flash videos" from Adobe. While the video is playing in Youtube you should see a message under the start, stop, pause button that says: Watch this video in lower quality for faster playback. That means that the PM4 version is playing, a different player. The one turned on by the added &fmt=18. Or on the link in this reply right click, then save target as will also work. It's a direct link to the download. Sinking into the quagmire of videos. Thanks Leo

Marien Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 Hi Leo, Don't ask me how I did it, but it worked. I used internet explorer in stead of firefox and then it asked me where I wanted to store the video file. http://www.concertina.net/forums/style_emo...ault/unsure.gif http://www.concertina.net/forums/style_emo...ault/unsure.gif Thanks Marien
Leo Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Cool!! The next one will be easier. I've configured, and reconfigured my software so many times, just to cut down on the many things the software wants to takeover. I want it where I want it . And all in one place. I don't believe the downlad helpers work too well with the new YouTube options yet. That's why I suggested this method in the "other post". I've tried other methods, and they mostly want to download the original low quality resolution. This method takes more to explain, than it does to do. Firefox has a download addon, but I believe it downloads the low resolution copy also. Enjoy Leo
Boney Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Add &fmt=18 to the address bar for one, and let it buffer. How'd you learn about this? Is there a way to make the &fmt=18 default on the YouTube channel for my videos? On some videos I checked, the sound is MUCH better with the &fmt=18 tag!
Leo Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 How'd you learn about this? Is there a way to make the &fmt=18 default on the YouTube channel for my videos? On some videos I checked, the sound is MUCH better with the &fmt=18 tag! There is a way as a YouTube member, unfortunately I forget where it's at since I'm not a member. As just a user and finder of fine music, I put it in manually. I'll look for it and post it. http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/03/y...ion-videos.html http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=6747 Thanks Leo
Leo Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 (edited) Hi Jeff YOUTUBE HACK: How to watch ANY VIDEO in HD by default! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_WMjRGXmhE...ponse&fmt=6 I believe this is the correct information. It's under user account, look for "Video Playback Quality" Then save settings. On your website, I think if you edit the link with the &fmt=18 to the end of the Whistling Rufus video, it will take you directly to the MP4 version. I don't have a website to try it, but since it's a link it should work. Thanks Leo Edited March 27, 2008 by Leo
