I made a new recording of 'The Crows Know Me,' one of the ones on the Recorded Tunes Link Page, though the vocal track is added on over the instrumental -- not done all together.

This one, of course, includes my foot bass.

So far, for me, it's still a bit awkward to play both instruments together. They have different respiratory rates and pulses! So my hands and my feet try to cooperate and if I'm not really careful, things get off-tempo.

So, I'm going to have to work on writing some stuff that's especially made for playing the English concertina and the foot bass together (with or without singing). Maybe I do lack expertise, but... I think I also simply prefer something that flows more easily.

Anyway, the new file is posted in my blog, but, I'll upload it here.

Wow -- that bass really addds drive and power to the tune!

At least you don't have to coordinate your footwork wiht Anglo bellow reversals.

Will you be bringing your foot bass to the NCW on April 19?

Would love to see/hear it up close. --Mike K.

Hi, ragtimer/Mike,

As it is, I'm not planning on coming to the NWC this year, but there's a chance I'll change my mind and drive out that way and attend the concert only. If I do, I'd be happy to bring the foot bass along. I'll post my plans a week or so before April 19th.

Yeah, I think if I tried to play my foot bass with an anglo, I might just get airborne and start flying, with all that action going on!

Hi, Mike...

Sorry to say, I've decided not to drive out to Amherst on 4/19. This is partly due to gas prices, but really a combination of stuff. :(

However, should you or anyone wish to visit me at my home, about 2 hours east of Amherst (depends of driving route, etc.), I'll be happy to show off the foot bass. As long as I know in advance, I can make sure I'm at home, on the Sunday 20th or whenever. :)

So, the next event is the Squeeze-In, in September, and maybe I'll bring it to that, if I attend. I did have it there last time, but I did a whirlwind trip, didn't stay the whole weekend. Won't do THAT again... was too tired, driving home!

Thankee!

'Crows...' is one of my favorite things to play (usually not quite neatly enough, but, whatever), and I always go back to that one, no matter what else I'm working on. I want to write more things like it.

It was partly inspired by listening to the gypsy music of (the late) Antal Kocze, an amazing violinist/fiddle player. I love the gypsy songs on his old record (now digitally remastered), and I learned a few on piano-accordion, as they're perfect for that, with those nice diminished chords.

'Crows...' was also inspired by the time I turned into my driveway and a huge crow swooped very low over my car, and gave me the impression he/she was going to grab it by the roof and whisk me away! (I love the crows we have around here! Edit: heheh, that's not to imply that I wish to be whisked away... )

I still need to smooth-out the bumps in the concertina and foot bass songs. Working on a few classical pieces ('tuney' types) from The Classical Fake Book, too!
