Larryo Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Hi, What is the best concertina gig bag available for those times when the case is not really needed. It is hard to tell from photos on line which has the better padding. Has anyone experiences of the different bags available? Thanks Larry

My personal opinion is that there's no time when a "gig bag" is adequate for a concertina, at least nothing that I've seen that would be described as such. I do have a double camera bag that I often use to carry two concertinas and a set of whistles, but it is both very well cushioned and semi-rigid. For carrying concertinas one at a time, if I have a hard case, I use it! I can't imagine a situation where I would use soft case if a hard one was available. 2

I can't imagine a situation where I would use soft case if a hard one was available. It depends... When I´ve got other things to carry as well with the concertina (music sheets, a little camera...) I´d have a camera case with adjustable blocks. The instrument sits well in there and there´s enough space for other stuff. In general I have it in a concertina-shape gig bag, well padded (´s one of Barleycorn´s). The instrument sits very firmly in there, it´s a handy size and the instrument is well protected. Concerning changes of humidity and temperature it is good for the instrument as well. I´ve got a big bag for my accordion too and does very well it´s job since many years. Christian

Christian I have both my boxes in gig bags right now, mine are both well padded (forget the brands offhand, each is different). I can see why you might want the heavier cases, I may build my own at some point, but one of my boxes did not come with one and the other had a really junky falling apart case. I choose to get a gig bag for a recently re-tuned box becuase I liked the other gig bag, it forces me to be more careful as I know its not a hard shell - if you have a cruddy hard case, it might give you a false sense of security. I remember a while back there was a lengthy discussion on keeping it in the case or not, I think I'll review that thread on what people thought about keeping it in the gig bag.

Thanks Larry I had one of these for a couple of years & it was really good, though I now use a hard case for my Norman.

It is hard to tell from photos on line which has the better padding. Has anyone experiences of the different bags available? I have an older M-Rock camera bag that is ideal. Rigid plastic inserts on the sides and top, but very light weight, tons of padding. That said, I use it for one of my hybrid concertinas, not the good vintage one, which stays in a high quality hard case.
squeezbxhvn Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I`ve got a nice small sailor...white canvas type mini duffle bag..... made by a seamstress friend. With lots of padding & a tassel to throw around my neck to keep it close. Its looks totally cool....feels secure, comfortable to carry ....I`ve sometimes slept with it for security! Seems practable & didn`t cost alot.
Simon Rosser Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Does anyone know of a multiple gig bag to take three Jeffries boxes? Having recently had a leg amputated, I need both hands free to get about and climb stairs. I'm looking for something I can hoist onto my back.
RAc Posted April 22 Posted April 22 I have a Tenba Axis v2 camera backpack. Would easily fit the bill but may be an overkill for your purposes... Terrible to hear about your leg, all the best!
wunks Posted April 22 Posted April 22 You might consider a front or "baby sling" type of carry. From back country skiing experience, I've found it's better for balance and safety. with an over the neck and shoulder sling You can swing the load around to the back or sides as needed.
Michael Eskin Posted April 22 Posted April 22 (edited) I can put my concertina in it's hard case in one of the small cordura diatonic accordion backpacks, which provides me with the best of both worlds. Larger bags, perhaps one for a piano accordion would probably hold additional instruments. Edited April 22 by Michael Eskin
Syncopepper Posted April 25 Posted April 25 Years ago I bought a case cover with shoulder strap that zipped over a concertina hard case. It works great but I haven't seen another one for sale in many years. It combines the protection of a hard case and the portability of a gig bag. It has a top half and a bottom half joined by a three sided zipper. It's a simple design and wouldn't be hard to make for someone who knows their way around a sewing machine.
doodle Posted April 26 Posted April 26 To Larryo: i bought a well padded, double anglo (my need) gig bag from Custy's Traditional Music Shop in Ennis about 10 months ago. I guess they may also sell solo bags, too. It has a top handle + shoulder strap + moveable padded divider, made by Fuselli (Italy), who also make great melodeon/accordion bags. Really tough outer, thick padding and made for the job by folks who specialise in gig bags. Not cheap - of course!
Paul Draper Posted April 27 Posted April 27 I had a look at the Fuselli website and it seems that they will make custom bags. Maybe get them to leave space for a fourth concertina?
