Caelie Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Hi. I am new here. I am thinking of buying a Jack or Jackie English Concertina mostly to accompany song. I sing soprano. Actually, the range of the Jackie is basically my range. I was wondering if anyone had any experience (or opinions) on whether a treble or baritone works best with a higher voice. The only thing I've seen on YouTube is an alto who is probably using a treble. see Thanks, Caelie

The only thing I've seen on YouTube is an alto who is probably using a treble. If I remember correctly, Kristina's concertina is a standard 48-button treble. (It's been several years since I saw her.) As for what "works best", that's very much a matter of personal taste but also highly dependent on what sorts of accompaniment you intend to try. I'm pretty sure you would find the Jackie to your liking. The Jack would be more of a gamble; you might be unhappy with it, or you might really love it. Would you like to sing with a fairly deep, organ-like accompaniment? Then the Jack may be for you. But if you would like a lighter texture and harmonies that share more of your voice's range, then maybe you would prefer the Jackie. (Of course, those are far from the only possibilities for either instrument.) And see if you can find some song accompaniments on the recorded tune links page. (I have some there, but I don't normally sing soprano. )
Mark Evans Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 I accompany my wife on a treble. Works fine. For myself it's just right as well. I've had my hands on baritone at NEFFA and enjoyed playing bass lines as others sang, but found the chords overwhelming for my taste (and my own limitations). At session I've often longed for a baritone to add those afore mentioned bass runs when hanging out with our backers. Our guitarist adds runs that could be well supported with a baritone.
