Hello

I plan on attending this years Irish Arts Week in East Durham N.Y.

I will have a car. Could anyone throw out some suggestions for places to stay with consideration toward reasonable comfort, price, vicinity to classes, tolerance of the sound of concertina eminating from the room.

Thanks,

Richard

Gavin's...The Country Inn....maybe The Carousel if they get it back in operation.....

Gavin's (and most of the other places) already has a wait list for next year. I would act now. The Shamrock house will treat you well, but avoid the two story building across the street, it's a bit moldy.

Good luck!

You may want to consider going over the Mtn. to Jimmy O'Connors Windham Mtn. Inn, in Windham. You can get there via back roads(starting across from Furlongs) without traversing the major roads, and save time, and hassle from the local long arm of the law. The place is reasonably priced, and mold and mildew free. And Concertina sound won't be a problem......

I would suggest the Shamrock House if staying close to town. The staff are very friendly and accomodating. The rooms are let us say "quaint". The biggest problem is just like a trip to Ireland you are paying as a body, not a room. It is financially smart for them to sell double rooms, instead of a single. The biggest advantage to staying at the Shamrock House is that you get breakfast, and dinner included in the price. Dear fellow readers, East Durham is shy of gourmet food in the dinner variety. As Don suggested O'Connor's my alternative is The Acra Manor in Acra. Now, any of your classes could be anywhere within 20 minutes f East Durham, spread around the county. Acra is really a turn off the "main" road Hwy 123 in East Durham, and very easy to make late at night. Watch out for deer and bears. There really are no bears that I am aware of, but one night about 5 in the morning you might "see" a bear. My friend Steve shouting Bear Bear Bear.....It was a dark trash bag, stuffed and placed on the side of the road. Powers whiskey has a way of bringing out the bear in some people.

Another suggestion is to call Yvonne at Furlong's. The have motel like units down stairs off the main roa. You will not get much sleep, but a session in your lap every night. On a very posite food note. A family opened a new little sandwich shop in across the street from the Shamrock house. A Ceasar salad, or a very tasty fresh soup and sandwich every day was a real treat. The Wild Card two picks for accomodation are McKenna's, and Stack's. Both are great places for a drink, both have a pool table, and both have friendly staff and owners.
