I have tried this and found it makes quite a difference to the response of the box. Have any other owners tried this? Why is the material there in the first place? Any reasons why I should not remove it (I can always put it back in)?

I've never heard of this before. My Marcus never had any sponge material behind the ends. My feeling would be to keep it out.

Baiscally what you have (or had) there are known as baffles, though I hadn't seen baffles made from sponge before. I usually add baffles made of leather to my concertinas to make the sound more mellow, which is something I like. Done properly this shouldn't affect the responsiveness, and I'm a little surprised that it did in the case of your Marcus.

I shouldn't think it will do any harm in taking it out, so if you prefer the sound, I agree, keep it out.
