Cheshire Waltz

Having got to grips a little with ABC I've transcribed The Cheshire Waltz which I'll add to the database shortly. In the meantime cut and paste the ABC text into the Tune-O-Tron Convert-A-Matic and submit it to get the PDF and midi.

Please note it's very slightly different to the Spiers and Boden arrangement. Enjoy :D

Thanks for the work....

Being as how I live in Cheshire, I have to give this a go!

(Is this the Spiers and Boden one?)

Sorry folks, I made a typo in the second full bar which should end with dc instead of dd. I've altered the abc above and the version on the Tune-O-Tron.

Still different to the Spiers and Boden version though!

I done a re-vamp of the abc file so it's a bit more like the Spiers and Boden version.

I had to rewrite the abc file originally posted here due to errors  , please see posts later in the thread.

Is it just me or are bar 1 and bar 2, and some others, 7 semiquavers long where they should be 6?

Hi Lester, I've temporarily removed the abc while I sort it out. the bars in question should have started with a dotted quaver instead of a crotchet but I'm out for the afternoon now so can't fix it straight away.

Goodness knows! Spiers and Boden manage to drag it out for four and a half minutes! Anyway I've rewritten the abc and even changed the ending part to bring it to a more satisfactory conclusion. Do feel free to re-write the abc as you see fit and I'd be interested to see how you mix up the parts and repeats. :) I wanted to write 'rall' under the last two bars but I can't figure out how to do that. <_<

It's Mel.nets TOTM for March. Maybe it's time to revive this lovely waltz, originally in the key of C and found in the Joshua Gibbons MS,1823,Tealby,Lincs. Here's the ABC for Pete's other version of it.

It's a toughie to deliver well though Chris. This tune is capable of great beat and drive - it's infectious and a true national treasure :)

I agree. It's easy to play correctly, but I find it difficult to give it drive throughout. It is a darn long tune, but I heard one player take the repeats out of the B and C sections and it didn't sound right to me.

(I'm reminded of the Cole Porter song, "Begin the Beguine," which is 108 bars. Ella Fitzgerald called it, "The Long Song.")

Hi Gary, as you're from the States you may not have come across Spiers and Boden who do a cracking version of the tune

, watch out for the kick about 1:30 in. John Spiers is also a noted melodeon player (I think I've seen you on melodeon.net too?).

Thanks. I do know Spiers and B., and you have seen me on MelNet. This video is excellent, but what they're doing is really hard. Building energy and maintaining it for the length of this tune. It's a subtle thing, especially when you don't have different instruments to bring in and arrange (as with Bellowhead). Things start to flag, BRING IN THE HORNS! Seriously, I'm just saying that it's a great tune, but requires a subtle touch, IMO.
