stephen masty
it's bad timing. as an utter neophyte looking to buy a first instrument (an anglo. ideally either a c/g baritone or a g/d tenor), of course I missed Kilve. <sigh> when and where are other british gatherings at which i could listen and learn, as well as perhaps meet people with second-hand concertinas for sale? Woody
it's bad timing. as an utter neophyte looking to buy a first instrument (an anglo. ideally either a c/g baritone or a g/d tenor), of course I missed Kilve. <sigh> when and where are other british gatherings at which i could listen and learn, as well as perhaps meet people with second-hand concertinas for sale? Firstly welcome to C.Net & the world of Concertinas With respect to Kilve, it's probably not a problem that you missed it as the level of the Spring meeting is aimed at players with a degree of experience all the way up to very accomplished players. I've been playing for the best part of 2 years and I can just about keep up in the Spring workshops. The Autumn Kilve meeting is aimed at beginners and improvers and hence is the one you should aim for. The WCCP also have regular playing days through the year where beginners are welcome and a great deal of help is available. For more info about Kilve and the WCCP playing days, contact the WCCP through their website http://www.wccp.info/ As for buying an instrument, this has been extensively discussed elsewhere and a search will yield a lot of information, but the starting point is always what type of music do you want to play and how much money do you have to spend? However, if you are looking to start playing an Anglo and don't want to commit a lot of money the Concertina Connection Rochelle seems to be emerging as the recommended starter instrument. I've got one, it does a good job, and if you don't take to the Anglo you could probably sell it on Ebay and get a good percentage of your money back. As for other festivals - it's a while yet, but the WCCP run introductory workshops at the Sidmouth festival. Chippenham Folk fest has some Concertina related workshops but I don't know what level they aim at. For a more local perspective, where about in the world are you? - W Edited March 27, 2007 by Woody

Welcome Stephen, If your anywhere near East Anglia, there's the Melodeons and More Day which will take place this coming Saturday, 31st March 2007, in Mendlesham, Suffolk. Despite the name, there's lots of concertina related stuff, Mike Acott will have a stand there and Colin Dipper will be present. http://www.eatmt.org.uk/melodeons_in_mid_s..._&_more.htm It's too late for you to book the workshops now, but the stands in the main hall are well worth the visit. Dave Prebble
Hi Gerry, Though not strictly a 'concertinafest' do consider the Bradfield Traditional Music Weekend Near Sheffield BTMW This event always attracts superb concertina players of all systems and all types of music from English Country dance through Irish trad to Jazz and at least two top makers will be in attendance this year giving advice and workshops. Check it out - you won't be disappointed. Regards Dave Prebble
stuart estell
There's the Swaledale Squeeze too, of course - Chris Algar installs his Concertina Emporium on the Sunday morning, and it's a fantastic weekend. One of the highlights of my year

You can book now, as I've had to cancel my trip over because of illness. Ring Katie She has my place for you. On Melodeon though. The evening concert could be good too.
