KerryFrank Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 (edited) I was told that the 48 key concertina maybe is only tuned by Zeuner Germany, and of an english maker????? Has anybody an idea???? Please see my other topic......... thanks christian Christian, I own several English concertinas, Lachenals and Wheatstones. (both made in England) The construction of this "Zeuner" concertina is EXACTLY like mine. Do the metal parts of the thumb straps have any markings? (you may have to move the leather) I've seen Wheatstones with markings on the hardware, rather than the body or interior. Good luck! Kerry Edited March 4, 2007 by KerryFrank
Stephen Chambers Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 christian, It is entirely possible that your Oscar Zeuner concertina was made in Germany, where English-system concertinas were usually known by the name melofon/melophon. It looks very similar to instruments by Schuster & Co. of Markneukirchen which have been discussed here previously, notably in this thread and also in this one.
Greg Jowaisas Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Stephen, Christian's english concertina appears to share some traits of a Tidder english that I have. Could there be a connection? Greg
christian Posted March 5, 2007 Author Posted March 5, 2007 Thanks to everybody helping with details. I´m looking forward a conclusion what the "48 keys" is as requested i did a close up of the golden ornaments on the leather (mostly hidden under the red paper) maybe is helpful, too! by the way, i do not have to sell them together, but is possible.
christian Posted March 5, 2007 Author Posted March 5, 2007 ..... more info ......... i took out the reed pan to see the makers label at the opposite side: there is NO !!! three of the leather flaps are missing, one is replaced. i tell you my thoughts: It is a english made Lachenal, Tidden or Wheatstone........ once overhouled in germany by Zeuner Leipzig ???? or the german made version.........;-) all looks confusing to me
Stephen Chambers Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Well I think we can rule out Lachenal and Wheatstone, but the relative crudeness of construction is rather reminiscent of Tidder. However, Schuster did build them like that too, and use fancy bellows papers like those: As well as fretwork in that design: So I think it's quite likely German.
