Lachenal 56 Key Edeophone For Sale

Hi all,

I have here a nice 56 key glass button Edeophone, circa 1910.

Serial No is 48872, tenor/treble, five fold bellows, glass buttons, with case.

This Edeophone was bought new by Mr J.B.Davies, and played by him only until he passed away a few years ago.It was left to his grandson P.Davies in his will, and Philip, who is a friend of 20 years standing, stored the concertina as he does not play.

I only found out he had it by accident, and he offered it to me to buy. However I already have a nice Aeola, and I cannot afford to pay him what it is worth, so he has asked me to sell it for him.

Before I put it on Ebay, I thought someone here might like to buy it, so you guys are getting first chance, then if no-one wants it I will put it on ebay after weekend.

This instrument is effectively one owner/player from new ! and has not been overhauled/" tuned " / messed about with in any way, it is not in "brand new" condition, there are a few small marks on it,and some wear on the fingerboard as is usual, but the bellows are excellent and the instrument plays a treat, with the bright tone usual from these top of the range instruments.

It is fitted with wheatstone quick-adjust thumb straps, looks like they have been on since new, and the case is one of the 1950's types, in good condition, it still has the key with it.

Just out of interest, I was told years ago, I think by Steve Dickinson, that the original leather cases always deteriorated in the North of England, because of the atmospheric pollution !! and certainly I can back this up in my own experience. Funnily enough, the bellows and the leatherwork on the concertinas is unaffected ( thank goodness )maybe the case protected the insrument from the atmosphere as well as from other damage.

At around 100 years old this is probably as good as it gets, it's condition is more like 20 years old.

I have been advised by a dealer friend that £1900 is a fair price, so that is what I am asking for it.

Insured post will be around £20

If you are interested, please email me, I can send photos if required.

Hmmm.... I wish ..... and it's so near to me!

ps presumably it'll need to be brought to concert pitch if it's untouched - can you check?

Hi Chris,

Sorry, I forgot to add this Edeophone is in modern concert pitch, as is my Aeola which dates from around the same time (1913), and that is a one-owner never been tuned too!

If you want an edeophone in good nick, you need to get in the car and come and look at this one Chris, there can't be many left around now, and we are just N.of Burnley Lancs, about an hour away - - - - -

What I want to know is how do people know that I want a tenor/treble. It's a conspiracy  how can two top class ones be offered on concertina.net in such a short time  It's not fair! (sounds of crying) please someone buy them - take the temptation away. Get thee behind me satan

Chris,

Let's get the logical and emotional parts of your brain working together on this:

(This is your left hemisphere of your brain talking:) If you buy now the period of amortization will be longer. That is the money you pay per year to enjoy a wonderful instrument will be less over the rest of your life than if you wait! That is not even taking into account that the price of these instruments has historically risen at least !0% a year the past five years.

(This is your right hemisphere talking:) You deserve it! You've been working and practicing hard. The feel of those glass buttons beneath your fingers and the response of this instrument will be a thrill unrivalled but by a few in life.

(Left brain:) And how long can the wife stay angry?!

(Right brain:) You can make it up to her.

(Left brain:) Just be sure you leave the concertinas home when you take her on that holiday!

Of course there are meds for this condition but life might not be as much fun!

Good luck.

Greg

ROFL ....... you've been listening in on my brain!

Husband ... he might demand a new fiddle

It could be concertina OR holiday ... sounds a good trade to me!

(And of course it wouldn't be quite so bad, 'cos I'd sell my current Lach. treble ... wouldn't I?)

Aaaargh! - I sort of hoped someone would have bought it and saved me the anguish.

Thanks for the counselling everyone :-)

On a more serious note ( sorry )

I have just been checking the Edeophone again, and the note range is exactly the same as my Lachenal 56 key " new model " english.

This one is an etended treble, so I guess that makes the Edeophone the same ? maybe someone with a better knowledge than me can confirm that the Edeophone was available in extended treble format ?

Sorry about the snafu, at least it lets Chris sleep easy tonight after all !

Christine,

My apologies for any male presumptuousness. A concertina's siren call knows no sexual boundries. The premise remains the same and a fiddle for your mate might outlast the holiday memories.

The extended treble revelation may change the "tenor" of the arguement but the allure of a new and wonderful instrument and the subsequent rationalization remain a nearly universal constant...at least on this website!

It's still gorgeous, but I can resist this, and will let the circling Americans and others have first dabs.

I will sleep easy, but DH is probably going to very confused for a while .. I'd started the softening up process and hadn't let on why ("why 's she suddenly volunteering to do all the cooking and washing up, and what a nice idea, a glass of wine with supper...")

All the best for the sale

Chris

ps Greg - no apologies needed - I should sign myself in full otherwise you have a 50:50 chance of a mistake whichever way you pick :-)

My wife is standing over me as I write this :( she is not sympathetic to my desire(for a tenor treble)

in fairness it was her idea that I take a concertina on holiday last year which required me to get my first one re bellowed and tuned, and again to be fair, as she has just reminded me :o she did allow me access to her credit card to purchase my second concertina. :D Justifying my current need is proving a little difficult and her comment goes something like- you can only play one at once-unfortunately true - but I may grow another hand

I don't understand how you could go on holiday without your concertina. Holidays can last for weeks, after all.

this is true. Mine,at mywifes instigation it has to be said, :D had a tour of the canadian rockies last year.

'I don't know if it is the climate, or a real cultural difference, but American wives always love and

are ever-ready to cheer on the new concertina. If mine could do a back flip she would, I suspect.

Richard'

treasure her Richard.

In truth my wife is really very supportive, if a little puzzled. I think that has to do with the 7 assorted guitars 1 banjo, 1 serpent, 1 cornetti, 1 lysarden, 1 mute cornett, various flutes 1 french horn, 1 tenor horn 1 accordeon 2 dulcimers, 1 french bassoon, 2 synths, 1 fiddle, 2 bowed psalteries, 3 drums 1 autoharp, 1 mandolin, 1 mandola, 1 bazouki, 1 flutina, 1melodeon, 2 concertinas, 8 cameras, 6 camera bags, and 10 hats all of which are scattered throughout our house. She firmly believes that if there is more than one variety of something that I will start collecting it  .Oh I forgot the 6 PDA's :)
