squirrellydave Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 Hi All, I'd like to buy a Stagi or Bastari 20 button Anglo Double Reed Octave tuned concertina. If anyone has one to sell or knows a dealer that offers these, new or used, please let me know! I'm new to concertina but play other accordions and I'd like to convert one of these to the south african squashbox tuning.... thanks! Dave

Dave Dave, Another 20b anglo, matching your criteria, showed up on eBay today! Item # 140078460393, a Stagi Gremlin, 20b anglo. It has a link for extra pics and a sound file of the concertina. Good Luck, Kerry
squirrellydave Posted January 25, 2007 Author Posted January 25, 2007 thanks kerry, that one is only a single reed model. I actually found a place that sells the Stagi C2, which is just what I'm looking for...suprisingly, hardly any concertina shops sell this model...I guess the 20 btn, double reed isn't too popular these days! dave

I must have missed the double-reed portion of your criteria, sorry. Keep on squeezin'! Kerry
Daniel Hersh Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Dave-- Is the Stagi octave-tuned or unison-tuned? If you haven't already made your purchase, you might also consider a German-made one such as the C-2A from Castiglione. I have a one of these (a G/D) on order and will post a report on it fairly soon. If you're interested, perhaps we can find a way to get together so you can try it out once its here. They're made by Schaumanufaktur in Germany. C.net member Klaus Guhl plays a 20-button from that manufacturer that I'm pretty sure is a double-reed--there's a nice recording of him here. Daniel thanks kerry, that one is only a single reed model. squirrellydave Posted January 26, 2007 Author Posted January 26, 2007 Hi Daniel, I'm looking for octave tuned, which is how they describe it on the Button Box website. Of course, it's $150 cheaper at Jim Laabs music, but they said it's unison! so I'm a bit confused.... Dave-- Is the Stagi octave-tuned or unison-tuned? Daniel Hersh Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 John Castiglione told me that the Stagi is unison-tuned too. You might want to ask the Button Box to double-check--they're generally quite customer-friendly. squirrellydave Posted January 26, 2007 Author Posted January 26, 2007 Hi again Daniel, thanks for passing thaty along..I just called Doug Creighton at the Button Box and he confirmed that the C2 is double reeds in an octave tuning. FYI, he says the Stagi's generally need to be re-tuned when they arrive at his shop, the factory is not very careful. Anyhow, I'm going ahead with that instrument and Doug is going to do the work to convert to squashbox...I'll let y'all know when it's done! Dave (hope you're enjoying thhe greek cd!)
Daniel Hersh Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 My Castiglione arrived today and is quite satisfactory for a low-end concertina. I'll be interested in hearing about your squashboxed Stagi once you get it. Is Doug really doing the work himself? My impression (as of about a year ago, when I was there having my probable Crabb tuned) is that he mainly manages, with Bob Snope and others doing the technical stuff. They're all good people though. Greek CD is good--definitely expands my free-reed horizons to hear it.
