Possible New Jeffries Scam

Apologies to the seller if I'm wrong, but this one smells.

If my memory serves, one of the contributors to this site was selling this box a long time back.

Again, relying on memory, I think it was 'cocusflute'. He lives(d) in New Hampshire.

It certainly fits in with his stated intentions at the time to spend part of the year in Ireland.

Beware.

This is a scam.

From budapestquartet to wakasaobama:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=7364438139

wakasaobama tries to sell, but no one meets the reserve:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=7389511341

Sells it this time to rees9 in the U.K.:

frederickwhiller puts this on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=300049580756

For those of you wondering if the text is familiar, it's copied from the first item. The "above thread" in both is this:

http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php...entry4402

The point is that this is a scam and I am reporting it now.

I have contacted the seller. I live about three hours from Sarasota, but will gladly make the trip if really there. I have heard rumours of a few musical snowbirds around the area.

Have you done so? This sure looks like the classic eBay scam to me. Make sure you ask him why there are no pictures on the listing, which is copied from an earlier listing that he didn't win.

I did report it when I spotted it at first but they seem to have ignored me on this one. Lately they have been pretty responsive.

I did receive the typical eBay response, yet the auction remains.

Today, I e-mailed Mr.cocusflute.

He is only man to report ebay "Seller copied or linked to your picture or description without permission".

I think so. :)

No question but it's a scam.

I wrote to the seller offering $3,000. He accepted and agreed to send it to Ireland at that price. He also sent me more pictures- the originals that I posted when I sold it to Obama in Japan. I told him I'd have a friend pay him in cash and pick the concertina up at the seller's house. I have not heard back from him, nor do I think I will.

The concertina reached $2,000 on the EBay auction.

I don't understand how the seller can accept Paypal. Doesn't Paypal want some proof of identity?

I got scammed by someone using Paypal once. I think they open an account then cover their tracks after being paid and before the scam is discovered. In this situation I found Paypal pretty useless.

I don't understand why Ebay didn't take action.

Some poor soul has just got burned.

Only if he didn't verify the existence of the concertina and the trustworthiness of the "seller." If the winning bidder is careless he may get a schooling. I did once, to the tune of $1,200. If you're out there in The Wild West you have to be very careful.

So what good is Paypal in the event of a problem, if you've no recourse after you've paid via Paypal and been scammed? I thought you were covered in the event somebody hijacked a Paypal name?

No substitute I'd say for talking to the seller (or the buyer) and verifying their identity and their good name.
