I've just been informed that Tuesdays "Flog It" programme (BBC 2 15:45) will feature Paul Martin playing concertina.

I see that it's coming from Cardiff. Did this programme feature the visit to Marcus Music at Newport, or was that another programme?

Regards,

Peter.

Great - thanks for telling us! I'm at home sick with a chest infection at the moment. Daytime telly beckons!

I believe it was last week's episode which came from Rochester. It was recorded months ago. Sharp-eyed viewers might have seen me shuffling along with the crowd, but they had stopped filming by the time I got to a table. I was getting a valuation on a telescope.

This is the British equivalent of "Antiques Roadshow" here in the States. But why "Flog It?" It sounds like something they used to say caused vision loss in the past.

Maybe "Flog It!" has not been exported to the States. Clearly "Antiques Roadshow" flies the flag for things ancient from this side of the pond.

Just in case it needs translating, to "flog" = to "sell" in this context.

Regards,

Peter.

PS - see my thread on "Bargain Hunt". Has this series made it to the States?

FOR THOSE STATESIDE:

"Bargain Hunt is a game show that gives two teams of amateur antiques collectors £500 and just one hour to go out into an antiques fair and find themselves a bargain. In about a week's time the items they've bought will go into a real life auction to be sold hopefully for a profit. The team who makes the most profit is the winner. But any profit the teams make is theirs to keep. Bargain Hunt achieved the highest viewing figures for BBC daytime television, netting around 2 million... "

Peter I don't think it made it here, but I have only basic cable TV so maybe it is available. I've heard of this one, sounds amusing. "Flog It" was a complete new one for me. Here in the States we get some of the best of British television, and the comedy shows are the best, if not an acquired taste here. Years ago I was more of a Fawlty Towers Fan than Monty Python, it seemed more coherent, because here in the States we had no clue to what some of the political allusions were refering to. It wasn't all that necessary to know for enjoyment of the show. I also was a fan of the "Black Adder series.

Considering I had seen enough episodes to have a reasonable conversation on the subject with you in that thread, Peter, I would say yes. I don't know if an american version would fly, but I enjoyed the broadcasts I saw of the British show. Still wondering if your adventure will ever be shown in the Columbus market.

The British equivalent of "Antiques Roadshow" is "Antiques Roadshow" ;) It's a UK programme format exported to other countries.

see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antiques_Roadshow for info

This show would not do well in Australia, at least not under the present title.

To flog, here in the convict colony, coloquially means to steal :o :o :o

it on over here. i watch on pbs.

And it was really nice. A visit to the workshops of Marcus concertinas, showing the construction process from pieces of wood, through to reed tuning and bellows making. It was a credit to the company, who obviously provide lovely instruments, hand-made, at reasonable prices.
