My neighbour has asked me to offer his Wheatstone McCann system 57 button duet for sale. The serial number is 26746 (1914-16) and it is in very good condition, with tight bellows and all buttons and reeds working. There are two patches on the bellows, as you can see.

It is not in concert pitch, but is in tune.

He'd like offers in the region of £1500

Contact me with any questions or for more photos.

I just checked the archives and it was March 1915. As I understand it, arguably the prime period for Wheatstones.

Certainly is. I have No. 26751 which is Ebony-ended, with 55 keys. The tone is absolutely superb.

With duets, would you normally include the air button, making it a 58-button instrument?

Interesting comment, Paul.

I've just re-checked the Wheatstone Ledgers. The one which Alistair is advertising (on behalf of his neighbour) is described as 58 key. Mine is described as 55 key; I've just checked it; 55 key + air valve!

Peter.

I've three of the things. (and for those of you following the 'how dreadful it is that some folk just sit on good anglo's they don't play' thread, I'm about to sell one of them) After a bit you stop worrying and get bored with counting buttons but I've just had a look. I've a 62 key + air which I've been describing as a 61 for ages without anyone questioning it, a 57 + air which is what I thought and a 71 + air, definitely described as 71 in the ledgers, so no, you don't count the air button. What's the 58'th note I wonder (but not enough to start looking at the pics...)?

I think this is probably a desirable instument; I find myself playing my 57 more than the other larger instruments because it's so handy; the bottom range is limiting at times especially if playing adapted piano music but it's ideal for busking along and folky stuff.

A 57 button it is then!
