Theodore Kloba Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 A while ago, there was a thread about the Finnish folk group Loituma, and a performance video was linked. I've been browsing the site that hosts that video, TVFolk.net and there are quite a few interesting things there, although I haven't quite found a "concertina": A polka on Bandoneon by Regimantas Zitkauskas of the group Vydraga. (I have one of their CDs and I may be related distantly to their leader, Algirdas Klova, who is featured in this polka for fiddles among others.) This performance will give you some idea of how the bellows are used in a folk application of a Bandoneon. The American style of Chemnitzer playing tends toward smoother bellows motion than this. "Pibddawns Trefynwy" by Welsh group Crasdant, which features a male harpist for m3838's benefit. Woo hoo! Another polka, this time by the Karelian group Myllärit, and featuring a garmoshka. I think that melody is known across a broader area than Karelia; I know I've heard it on one of my recordings but I can't place where. Not a live performance, but a music video of In the Forest by Warsaw Village Band, one of my all-time favorite groups in the "world" genre.
