Interesting, but:

• One can hardly see the wire in the video (or even the finished spring at the end).

• I would lose the sound track. It's distracting and adds nothing. With the whispering at the beginning, one might even think it is unintentional.

'file is not found on the server' is the message I am getting

Dave

Yep, so did I.

But do this: in the browser adress field, remove the file name "spring.mpg", hit return. You will get a plain window with a list of files (which one shouldn't really get - another story). Download the file - don't click the name, but right-click, "Save target as...".

Looking at the donwloaded file reveals the problem: the file name is "spring.mp.txt" (at least as I receive it). Change the extension to the correct ".mpg" and Bob's (pun intended) Your Uncle.

As to the content: this is a great idea, but I do agreee with David, too small, too fuzzy, and no sound please (unless there is some hidden measage there :D . But all that is to be overcome without fuss.

Incidentally, I am a few days away from (re)making the springs (the first ones were too soft) for my project. I have developed another type of spring making jig. When the dust has settled (= when the thaing is playing) I'll consider doing a video - at least photos (of which at least one is bound to appear on my project pages). The biggest problem for has been (in a way still is) to find the proper material for the springs.

I have another clip but it is 85 meg AVI file. Too big

This was a 1meg MPEG file too small.

I need a avi to MPEG conversion, but I cannot find one for a Mac computer

I thought it was a good place to start to understand how the spring is being constructed. Certainly much better than trying to describe it alone.

Perhaps a better look at your tool would help me Bob. What gauge of wire did you use?

As for the link - it appears your filename just had the .mp suffix instead of .mpg - thus (for some) the broken link (I just removed the filename altogether and looked for the most recent file).

The above should work for anyone getting the 'broken link' and who might be unfamiliar with poking around the address line.

Thanks for sharing your method Bob!

Egad,

That file is awful. I tried to hide it by changing the name, but you guys continue to ferret it out.

I am deleting it now.

try these and let me know if they work. These are reduced files of an 85 mg AVI file. If they play for you,

A GREATBIG thanks to HENRIK! If they don't look good.....back to the drawing board.

Hi Bob,

Neither file worked for me.

Hope "springs" eternal though.

Greg

The first one (.mov) requires QuickTime, and, yes, the other is faulty.

The first one (mov) worked fine on my Mac. The mpg dowloaded, but then I just got to look at a large blue question mark.

Its a beautifully simple device. I'm going to make one now!

The "MOV" file worked fine on my PC, but the "mpg" and "mp4" didn't work at all.

I thought the "MOV" illustrated the shaping process quite well. If I knew the composition and size/gauge of the wire used, I've no doubt that I could create a similiar forming tool and wind a spring in short order.

Bruce,

OK, if the MOV file works on your PC I will stick with that format for now.

Try this:

http://hmi.homewood.net/video/test2.MOV

is is different in appearance than

http://hmi.homewood.net/video/springstream.MOV

different compression

I promise to stop wasting time after this last post. I have 52 rivets to put into 52 levers.

Bob,

Your "test2.MOV" file displayed with a sharper image, though I could follow either version. I also tried your "test2.mp4" and it looked good too. I ended up going through everything in the directory and all the files played on my end.

I enjoyed the BobnAlex video, and the news story was great.
