Would a new concertina (say a Marcus or A C Norman) be likely to have more volume than say a reconditioned Lachenal? My 20-button Lachenal is pretty quiet which is fine for singing but I think it would get totally lost in other situations.

Richard,

There are lots of factors at work here, and I'm sure others will wade in with reasons why an instrument may or may not be louder than another regardless of its maker.

I play a Norman and have played many Lachenals over the years. I believe that you will find a Norman more than meets your volume needs in any but the most raucus of settings. As you're in the SE of England you could arrange to visit Andrew's workshop in Sussex and find out for yourself.

I have brass reeded Lachenal, that is rather quiet

But when it is played on the street, suddenly it's volume increases.

When played with a fiddle, it can be heard quite well. I think it's not the issue of been heard, but the issue of adding to the sound.

It is also more of an issue with dynamic range. My entry level Anglo 20 button is not a good one, but dynamically better than George Case EC I had a few years ago, which was pretty much on/off.
