Larry Stout Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 I'm planning to play the tune "The First of May" at a session on, you guessed it, the first of May. I have three versions from different sources which make an interesting progression. The notes are essentially the same, but The version from Cole's 1000 fiddle tunes is a reel in A minor (no sharps) The version from Allans Irish Fiddler is a hornpipe (dotted) in A mixolydian (two sharps) (my favorite) The version from O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1850) is a reel in A major (three sharps) (downright wierd) I also found versions on the abc tune finder in A Dorian (one sharp), both as a reel and as a dotted hornpipe. There is an aparantly unrelated jig in G with the same name. Does it also exist in other versions of A?
