seniorgal Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 I recently found a M. Hohner concertina in my attic. It has a stamp on it saying that it was made in Germany. It has ten white round buttons on one side and two vent(?) holes on the right side. The right side also has a leather strap in which to insert your hand. On the rear of the concertina the following words are "steel reeds on individual plates". Does anyone know anything about this instrument?

I would recommend a search of the site. Hohner should come up a few times as they have been well discussed here over time.
Daniel Hersh Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 I think it might be a melodeon, not a concertina. Does it look anything like this? I recently found a M. Hohner concertina in my attic. The description says 10 buttons on one side, but what about the other side? And it says a leather strap on the right side (is that the same side with the buttons, or not?), but what about the left side? I'm inclined to suspect that it's a 1-row melodeon, that the 10 buttons are the melody side and the "vent holes" are the bass side (which should be the left side, not the "right"), possibly missing the valve levers. But it's hard to tell without a photo or more detail, so here are some questions about more detail: Seniorgal, are the ends (and the bellows cross section) square in shape, or rectangular, or hexagonal? Do both ends have buttons, or only one. The ten buttons you mentioned, are they in a single row, or two rows of 5?
JimLucas Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 I think it might be a melodeon, not a concertina. Does it look anything like this? Ah, Daniel, you snuck your post in while I was composing mine. Well done. Especially including the photo link.
Paul Read Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 That'll teach me not to do things with a fast look in the office! I missed the bit about two buttons on the right. You're correct gents. Sounds like a one-row melodeon doesn't it?
