Rhomylly
For some reason, this makes me inordinately happy. Probably because I am experiencing a lot of frustration learning certain old-timey tunes for a certain event in March/April

Rhomylly
Avalon Quickstep. I'm just not getting the "flow" of it, no matter how much I practice and how many times I listen to the mp3.

Rhomylly
Sadly, no. (we were supposed to hear by this Friday and I haven't heard anything yet, so...) This is for the Southwest Squeeze-in.
John Wild
Well, I think all these heavyweight boxers should have a knockout competition, with the winner getting a match against the one ineluctable opinion maker. - John Wild
Samantha
Congratulations Rhomylly! And take the tune you're struggling with r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w-l-y but still rhythmically correct. Do that for a couple of days then gradually build up the speed ... Samantha
Jim Besser
Avalon Quickstep. I'm just not getting the "flow" of it, no matter how much I practice and how many times I listen to the mp3. DOn't know which version you're learning from (the recorded link page is down tonight, if that's where you got it) but this version is the clearest and easiest to follow that I've found: http://www.folkmads.org/megaband_tunes.html Scroll down to Avalon. These crooked OT tunes are a gas to play, when you get the knack. And we don't have the intonation problems the fiddlers have!
m3838
What a great page, that Megaband ... Tune List... But I just can't get this Avalon Quickstep. I mean I hear all the changes in rhythm and sincopation, but why would they do this to a tune? Doesn't sound very convincing to me. Does a dance require such an extravaganza or it's a tradition of some sort? And what would be the basis for such tradition? Sounds to me like they play a tune, and suddently someone shoots one of the musicians, but the band picks up.
JimLucas
But I just can't get this Avalon Quickstep. ...why would they do this to a tune? ... Does a dance require such an extravaganza... Doesn't require it, but does get energy from it. Have you danced a square dance to a live band? If not, you should try it. ...or it's a tradition of some sort? And what would be the basis for such tradition? Well, it's definitely a tradition. It's also a style. As a way of spicing up the music it's an alternative to the ornamentation of Irish music. And the "stepping" in the dance is basically a walking step, a "driving" motion without fancy gesturing or "fluttering" of the feet. This type of tune provides the "push" that helps the dancers along.
