groeswenphil Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 Hi group, Haven't seen any discussion here about this band. They're a three piece band....playing a lot of Irish style music, despite the fact that two of them are English. Chris Sherburn plays a Wheatstone Anglo and quite honestly, he's awesome. Beside him......Nick Scott plays Uillean pipes , Denny Bartley plays guitar and sings. Try to catch them live if you can as they are also very funny . You'll leave their concerts amazed by the music, but also with tears in your eyes from laughter. If you can't catch them live, then their CD is well worth reaching for the plastic. Phil

Phil Yes, Phil I agree, although I've found Denny Bartley's singing to be a bit of an acquired taste. Chris Sherburn is an amazing player if slightly terrifying at times. I have vivid memories of an afternoon workshop spent with a friend run by Chris. She's a good Irish player but very shy and I tend to play English. At the time, I couldn't play by ear at all. Needless to say, we provided Chris with most of his feedlines. I'd say go and see them anytime, they're always worth it. We'll see them at Uley in March and are really looking forward to it. Jill

Phil Chris's Wheatstone is a Steve Dickinson 3 row C/G, and has FOUR fold bellows! Honest. A brilliant player, and if you want a taster, can be found on Anglo International. Regards, Graham
red Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 They are always a "Good Night's Fun", we've seen them several times including, quite unexpectedly, a blues festival in a field!!! Catch their dates at http://www.lastnightsfun.com/gig_guide.html
Lars Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 Chris Sherburn was one of the first players I heard on recording, he's my favorite to listen to....I think LNF is fantastic all around. I would agree about the vocals being an acquired taste though but he's great on guitar. Nick Scott is an incredible piper, fast and in tune. Thanks to Graham I have their CD's except for 'Foothold' which I can't find. I'd say 'Dubh' and 'Live at the Wharf' are my favorites. Sad to say I'm geographically challenged so have never seen them live. I've emailed their agent and offered to help if they ever get to the US/Seattle area. Glad you brought up the subject Phil... Lars
groeswenphil Posted January 29, 2006 Author Posted January 29, 2006 Shame you can't catch them live. As well as being great musicians, they're just so funny. There's a constant banter between Chris Sherburn and Nick Scott on Uillean pipes with subtle quips like..........How's the blood pressure..........are you inflated yet....and as he assembles his pipes, 'Anybody see Scrap Heap Challenge' last night. Personally, I really like Denny's voice........love the track , 'I'll go down to Sammy's Bar.' Still.......as a concertina player, Chris takes some beating. Phil Edwards
Peter Brook Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 Personally, I really like Denny's voice........love the track , 'I'll go down to Sammy's Bar.' Phil Edwards I've seen them twice before and looking forward to seeing them again at Easter at the festival in Fareham. Denny is one of the best "old style" (sean nos) singers around. This style is unlike "modern" singing styles and that is why it takes some tuning in to appreciate. It's meant to have been passed on aurally from the bardic/druidic style of singing in the western fringes of Ireland. Sammy's Bar is one of my favorite songs (written by Cyril Tawney) but the LNF version is immense. I sing the song quite regularly after Morris practice in our little session at the Peacock. Another highlight on "Tempered" is a slow version of "Whiskey in the Jar". From "Dubh" the track "A Tinkerman's daughter" is breathtaking.
Peter Stephenson Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 My brother John loned me an early recording by just Chris and Denny. Im listening to it in the car going to work, Great concertina and guitar, then... Denny sings 'Kilkelly, Irland', I have to pull over, cant see through the tears, still hav'nt got over that song yet.
Peter Stephenson Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 That was a long time ago, I had forgotten about the pollis man in his jim jams, (there must be a trunceon joke here somewhere). I do remember tears of joy when you bent the words to 'New York galls' to include an Anglo Saxon by the name of Eddie Dunmore.
Alan Day Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Just a reminder that Last Nights Fun have been booked for the Concertina weekend Festival which is featured at Warwick Folk Festival this year Weekend of 22nd July.Other guests include John Kirkpatrick,Brian Peters and other Concertina players are being invited as we speak. There will be Concertina Workshops etc I may even be there. geoffwright Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Went to see LNF last night - excellent - I watched closely and worked out Chris plays a lot of the tune with his left hand up both rows. We had a natter and he said he is back on-line now so will be looking in on concertina.net.
