With my spouse's permission, I ordered the following CD's from the Button Box last week as a Yule gift to myself:

Noel Hill, The Irish Concertina 2

Mary MacNamara, The Blackberry Blossom

Chris Timson & Anne Gregson, Peaceful Harbour

The box arrived yesterday. My spouse has confiscated AND hidden it until December 21.

My Edgley is on the way to the shop :( (I never ever should have sold that turbo Stagi. Bad Rhomylly, no biscuit. Note to self: buy a backup concertina asap)

I have laryngitis so bad I can't talk, much less sing.

I am going completely nutters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is indeed privation; my sympathies. Try air concertina; I used to do that a lot in the car, stuck in Washington traffic, until I discovered the harmonica. Great for noodling around when the concertina isn't available.

But a second box is pretty much essential for those infected with the bug.

If you want to know the exact time remaining till Yule, have a look at the Winter Solstice countdown on my dearest one's website here. :)

PS: Sorry to disappoint you, but I've got bad news for you: Yule's not the 21st this year, it's on the 22nd, sorry!

SSSSSSHHHHH! He doesn't know it's the 22nd! (we tend to go by the date calendar, not the astrological calendar)

Sit down, relax.

Concentrate on your fingers, make them warm.

Good.

Now: imagine a small ping-pong sized ball of warmth and put it into your chest.

Now moderately slow move it up to your throat and back 6 times.

Now do the same but move it up/down in spiraling motions.

6 times.

Dissipate it.

Create another ball, cold (or cool) one. Imagine a snowball

Same movements, up/dow, then circular motion.

6 times each.

Everyday 2-3 times a day. Takes 15 minutes.

Helps enormously.

To enhance the healing effect, put a smile on your face and force yourslef to feel happy that your now are getting rid of laringitis.

Closing your eyes, soft music, etc. is not necessary. Keep it simple. Just don't try too hard. A little by little.

Yule may only be five days away but for some of us the Winter Solitice is not for at least six months! :P

[Great website though :)]

And yes, a back-up concertina is definitely a good idea :)

Cheers

Awww... I just discovered Spiers and Boden, *AND* that The Button Box has ALL FOUR *right now* AND they just sent them to me priority mail!!! I'm in heaven!! And no spouse to nab them!! Hee hee hee! But I'm hiding The Big One for my son ... a Martin six string. He thinks he's getting more clothing again ...

You seem pretty confident that he doesn't browse Concertina.net as a Guest. ;)

Awwww, poor Rhomylly! I can sympathize with the voice, and don't know what I'd do if the concertina wasn't available. Actually, yes I do, I'd play the recorder. Got one? It really isn't the same, but you can make actual music with them when nothing else is available.

Don't use your voice more than you absolutely have to- don't even whisper, it can strain your voice. Drink lots and lots of fluids. I avoid dairy, but it doesn't seem to affect some others. My friend Alouette recommends hot spiced red wine with some honey, but alcohol doesn't work for everyone, either. The best (and most frustrating!) solution is: rest. And give it time!!

Hang in there, sweetie. Play your Revels recordings if it helps!

Well if he does, then he'll have a big smile on his face anticipating it for the next eight days!!! That's worth far more to me than the surprise! ;)

For a unique Solstice watch, there are three webcams inside of Maes Howe, in Orkney. This 5,000 year old Neolithic chambered tomb has an access passageway that you can crawl through, out of the side of the mound, pointed exactly toward the Sun's rays on Dec. 21st, so that the whole inside of it, which is normally pitch black, is flooded with the Sun's light on the day of the Solstice, exactly.

Inside the tomb are inscriptions in Frisian runes and three burial chambers.

Nonsense! Why would a relative who doesn't even play concertina be reading this stuff?

They just ARRIVED!!! Is that the speed of lightning or what? I placed my order online at The Button Box night before last, for the three Spiers and Boden CDs that they had listed online at that time, and yesterday morning received a nice email to let me know they had the fourth one just come in. They mailed all four out yesterday, and I just got them, 24 hours later (no extra postage!!!).

I still have to put lights on the tree, and send out another couple Christmas cards... But I have great music to listen to while I'm doing it!

Just to rub a little salt into it.

I was at a Victorian market at Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield a couple of weeks ago. There were several wandering folk music players together with a number of dance groups, all very enjoyable. I was glancing at the contents of one of the stalls when I heard some music behind me which sounded familiar. Turning around I found myself looking straight at Messrs Spiers and Boden who were standing there playing. Nobody else was paying them much attention so they had an audience of one for about 15 minutes before my wife dragged me away much to my disgust. :(

Oh! That's so sad! We certainly are a very elite, if small, group who recognize the sterling worth of Spiers and Boden! I wish I had been there to see them!!
