David Colpitts Posted April 10 Posted April 10 Hello, All. My wife and I are contemplating a move to the Montclair/Verona/West Orange New Jersey area, to be near family. It would be a real "plus" if I could find some regular sessions, be they English, Irish, Americana, Quebecois or??? Any information will be appreciated. Thanks!
wschruba Posted April 11 Posted April 11 I'm not explicitly aware of anything in that area, though Montclair is home to a state university with a very well respected music program, and I am aware of at least several groups in the greater NYC area that do Morris/English Country Dancing. There is a Montclair Early Music Society, but from my limited exposures to the group, it's almost certainly not what you are looking for (though perhaps they know more...?). As I do not live in that area, I have not particularly investigated further, but I know that there ARE people and groups that play folk music around there. Perhaps @Jody Kruskal may know more, since he is around NYC? I grew up in Maplewood (a stone's throw, as they say)...if you happen to have both the means/the luck to find a house around the big park in Verona, a large portion of the trees around there are cherry blossoms. This time of year is absolutely stunning when they bloom. As the season turns, and the swallows return to Capistrano (that is, the out-of-towners return to the Shore), I have plans to broach the idea of Sunday afternoon "folk sessions" at my church posting in Toms River to the board of trustees, but I gather that may be somewhat of a haul for you, and less than certain.
jgarber760 Posted April 12 Posted April 12 (edited) A friend of mine lives in Belleville and is an excellent fiddler in multiple genres. She said there isn’t a trad session in the area though she would like to get one going. I don’t live around there but I do go into Riverdale (Bronx) NY where we have an active monthly Québécois session at An Beal Bocht, an old Irish bar restaurant. There is also a long running Irish session there as well as concerts. Edited April 14 by jgarber760
