Daniel Hersh Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Any ideas about this one on UK eBay? I would guess German, but with an English-style action - but I'm not at all sure. Listing is at https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/117071551549 .
DDF Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Ok, so I clearly have too much time on my hands. Here are a few more thoughts on this concertina listing which may be of some use if anybody is thinking of buying it.The reasons I thought it might be made by Nickolds. It looks like it has it has side cuts in the lever posts, not very clear in this enlargement. It has the same strange little thistle shape in the left-hand fret as seen in some Nickolds "english " concertinas. It has a very similar ends to this one.It also has those(marked in blue) rings with a comma in which I have seen on a couple of other Nickolds ,but can't readily find them just now. If there was a picture of the reeds that might show the tongue clamps having open ends which would be another hint.
jkmelb Posted March 8 Posted March 8 (edited) Hear some more photos documenting the restoration of a Nickolds concertina. The action looks similar... https://www.accordionmagic.com/albums/Nickolds1/index.html And the Concertina Museum lists 2 Nickolds anglos... https://concertina.org/concertinas/nickolds-1850s-dm00279/ https://concertina.org/concertinas/nickolds-365-1850s-cm00271/ Edited March 8 by jkmelb
Anglo-Irishman Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Don't German-built concertinas always have all the levers running parallel between buttons and pad-holes? Bandoneons have this configuration, as did my first GDR 20-button concertina, and it was taken over by Stagi for their Anglos. Cheers, John

Some look like copies of English made instruments hence the original query. 1
wschruba Posted March 8 Posted March 8 That sure looks like a concertina reed shoe just visible in the first photo, under the missing pad.

I'm pretty convinced at this point that you're right that it's a Nickolds.
