Ubizmo Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 On YouTube, I've found a very few people (some of whom post here) playing 20th century standards and other pop music on the concertina. Most of the recordings are, very understandably, either classical or folk tunes of different genres. I listen to it all, but when I go to Spotify to look for recorded music, I don't find much in the way of standards/pop. Simon Thoumire comes close sometimes, and there's some very interesting avant-garde stuff, but mostly classical and folk, as on YouTube. But maybe I'm missing something. Can anyone recommend anything in the standards/pop category, or some artists who occasionally nod in that direction?
David Barnert Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 @Randy Stein may well be the guy you’re looking for. He doesn’t post here too often (although he did yesterday). Check out his presence on Youtube and Soudcloud.
Matt Heumann Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 I've done 11 or 12 pieces from the 30-40s as well as some modern pieces from anime or Asian soundtracks: https://www.youtube.com/@mattsconcertina1028/videos
Ubizmo Posted December 29, 2025 Author Posted December 29, 2025 Matt, I've watched most of your videos. Very enjoyable! I've also watched Randy Stein and others. Wonderful music. What I don't find is anything like this on Spotify, which would be published distributed music. It seems there's a niche there, albeit small, to be filled.
Randy Stein Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 When you record and/or post music on Bandcamp or Spotify, there is a publishers requirement to obtain rights to record the music. Sometimes this is waived but with modern music the various publishing houses that own rights to a piece of music require a fee. Sometimes in the thousands of dollars. DCA is working on a recording project in the new year. So we'll see...
RAc Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 I have a few recordings of early 20th century American music on my youtube and soundcloud channels (see footer). I do not do spotify (are there compelling reasons for it for people who simply want to put out stuff with no commercial interest whatsoever)? Other players to look for regarding your scheme of prey are Danny Chapman (ratface) and Michael Pierceall (just to clarify: I do NOT imply to be in their league, I am not).
Don Taylor Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 Michael Pierceall has recorded a lot of 20th century music on his ECs: https://youtube.com/@michaelpierceall?si=K51F4kjdAM4N315V
David Colpitts Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 And you might try Gavin Atkin, whom I believe has posted tunes of the sorts you seek; some solo, some accompanying his wife, Julie Atkins.
SIMON GABRIELOW Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 Stay with the YouTube, I would say, as it's straightforward to navigate. And there's sometimes still auto checks in music copyright, performed on the site, mainly but it's quite straightforward to perform established music, or ones own new musical stuff if desired. Sometimes it makes an error; for example, I stuck my own excerpt if a Vivaldi tune on, and the auto. Checker thought it was an established commercial sound recording( I was quite tickled by the assumption😊)!. I don't do pop music myself, and make a few standard folk tune pieces, and do prefer figurative melodies.

I've watched your videos, as well as most of the others recommended in this thread, and that's what got me wondering why I don't find much of this sort of thing on Spotify. Now I begin to understand.
David Barnert Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 Another one to watch is Stefan Böhmer. Looks like he hasn’t visited concertina.net in almost 3 years. Web site: https://www.musikboehmer.de Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@musikbohmer7984
Ubizmo Posted December 29, 2025 Author Posted December 29, 2025 My obvious reason for asking about this is, I like to listen to concertina music. There are some playlists on Spotify, but it's nice to hear more genres represented. Also, as I work on my own EC playing, I realize that the kind of Irish session stuff that I play on the whistle will be out of reach (at session tempo anyway) for a while. But the ballads and melodies that I play on the sax are not out of reach at all. So it's a delight to hear then played skillfully on the concertina, and it inspires me to work on them and learn to add harmony.
AndyNT Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 Anne Niepold plays jazz on diatonic accordion.

Two reasons I don't use Spotify: 1- Not being a performer, I don't feel any need for lots of people to know my music, I just want to show I existed. 2- They wanted too much info and had too may hoops to jump through. I'm also leery of app that say they will spread you everywhere to increase your presence................no thank-you. I'm fine with my Dropbox links & YouTube

RatFace Posted January 1 Posted January 1 John Nixon has a couple of recordings of jazz on English concertina. https://concertina.org/library-single-record/?pdb=1172

jdms Posted January 4 Posted January 4 (edited) The singer/songwriter Willi Carlisle plays guitar or banjo more often than not, but he also plays a Hayden duet. Here he is doing a Richard Thompson song: Edited January 4 by jdms 1
