Jim Besser Posted October 11 Posted October 11 During a session at the recent Northeast Squeeze In, I was much taken by Peter's Schottisch, written by Tim van Eyken and played by a talented C.Netter. It seemed to me it would go nicely with another recent favorite, Vill du Flyga, written by Leija Lautamanja of the wonderfully named Floating Sofa Quartet. Played here on a 30 button Jeffries G/D Anglo Note - SoundCloud may nag you to register. You don't have to, just find the X on the right side and the nag screen will go away. This is really irritating; I pay for this service, and people who listen shouldn't have to go through this. https://soundcloud.com/concertinist/peters-schottisch_vill-du 4

I would not have thought to pair those two tunes (I learned Vill du Flyga off the playlist you put together for the aforementioned session), but you're right that they work very well together. I like how you interpret them both a little more angularly than the originals. I have a set where I combine Peter's Schottisch with two other modern melodeonist-composed tunes. I've never played it in public, out of a reluctance to present people with too much obscure weirdness at once. But maybe I'll see if I can record it and post it here.
Jim Besser Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 Please do record - I'd love to hear what you've paired it with. Re: 'melodeonist-composed tunes' - a group of us were talking about this recently. Tunes that work wonderfully on melodeon don't always translate well to concertinas, especially solo concertinas. It's been a frustration for me because I'm really attracted to many of these tunes. My solution a few years back was to start a new band just doing modern Euro composed tunes, for performance, not dance. Having the other instruments in the mix - guitar and fiddler or viola de gamba - made some of these tunes come alive for me. But still, the texture of the tunes was very different. Sadly, the band did not survive the pandemic. But it's an ongoing interest of mine.
Johanna Posted October 12 Posted October 12 No recordings yet, but I broke out Will's Way - presented at the same session by another talented c.netter - at the Hyattsville session this morning, and it was declared to be "a whole vibe." I think that's a good thing? 2
