doodle Posted September 11 Posted September 11 (edited) I bought this instrument around a year ago from Barleycorn, but for personal reasons I want to sell. It was fitted with new valves, springs and pads prior to purchase and was tuned to concert pitch (A 440) This is a Jeffries 38-Key Anglo in G/D with steel reeds. It was described by Barleycorn (Chris Algar) as: 'a rare example of a Jeffries in remarkably original condition. Of course, things like pads, valves, springs and straps inevitably need to be changed during the lifespan of a concertina, but it is unusual to find a Jeffries that appears to have been made in G/D originally as opposed to being tuned down from Ab/Eb, with original bellows in very good condition, and having no reeds which have been moved around or swapped out. It is also an incredible player. G/D concertinas can sometimes be a little slower than their C/G counterparts due to the size of the reeds, but this one is lightning quick, responsive, and has that trademark Jeffries sound- a bite and brightness that no other maker ever really matched. At some point in its life, somebody has ‘protected’ the bellows with a kind of varnish, which has indeed maintained the decorative gold-tooling very nicely, but has stained the very top of some of the bellows papers. You won’t get a better G/D anglo than this from any of the Victorian makers.' Quote from the original advert from Barleycorn. I can fully endorse this description, as it really is a gem, fast and loud if required, and with clean polished ends, (which are actually quite shiny although looking matt in the pics.) etc. Compression is excellent and button pressure is light, so it really is a 'lightning fast' player. I don't feel I can sell for less than I paid, so the price is firm and postage will be extra or additionally collection in person (Devon) is welcomed. I have a very high quality Swan flite-case at additional cost also available, should the buyer be interested. Price £6000 Sale to UK buyer only. Now also offered for sale elsewhere, but donation made to concertina.net if bought by member Edited September 17 by doodle
