I have just been offered a 34-button Dipper Anglo, No 103.

Now, I have no reason to suspect that this is not a perfectly legitimate sale, beyond the fact that the seller clearly knows nothing about concertinas. But as part of the due diligence process, I thought I'd enquire if anyone on this forum has had it stolen?

If it rings a bell or strikes a chord, please let me know.

Thank you all for your invaluable help and suggestions. I now know that Simon Haines bought it from Barleycorn in late 2021, and sold it in March 2023 to R. Barnford. There the trail goes cold, but if anyone knows of a player of that name, I'd be very grateful for contact details.

Before Barleycorn it was owned by the late Steve Samwell from the Southampton area.  He died in July 2021 at the grand old age of 97.  I catalogued his collection of squeezeboxes for his family.

It was advertised for sale on concertina.net two years ago. You can find the posts by searching the forum for the word Dipper

I just did. Searching on the word Dipper yielded 112 hits. I didn’t look through them all.

Then I narrowed my search to Dipper and 103 and it only brought up this thread.

If you can find it again, please post the link here.

Here's the link to the thread which led me to Simon Haines. He sold the instrument in March '23 to R. Barnford, of whom I can find no trace. Anyone know the name?

Interestingly, the current would-be seller has also approached Chris Algar, but Chris tells me that when he enquired about the provenance, the seller simply said he bought the instrument from his brother.

Putting the most charitable construction on this, I suppose it is just possible that the brother acquired it in a house clearance. But given all the circumstances (Rumanian name, lack of provenance, total ignorance of concertinas) I would advise anyone else who is offered this instrument to proceed with extreme caution.

Is it this one perhaps? The date looks about right...

Yes, it’s the same thread David R linked to. And in one of the photos you can see the serial number, 103. The serial number is not stated in the text, which is why my search couldn’t find it.

My Dipper C/G 30 button, Serial No. 100 (1978)....does that make it Colin's first anglo made.

Actually, I thought Colin's sequence started at 101... but clearly I was wrong, and yours may well be the first!

I'm delighted to say that, with the help of a previous customer of mine, the rightful owner of the Dipper (and a Connor which was stolen at the same time) has now been in touch with me, and the police are on the case. Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to what will hopefully be a happy outcome.
