Accordionne Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Why would Jack Talty play on the Phoenix if it doesn't live up to the quality of a good concertina? Am I naive... lol This suggests that it would be a good intermediate instrument.
Accordionne Posted June 7 Author Posted June 7 Excuse my ignorance, there is every reason to believe that this would be a good alternative
Accordionne Posted June 7 Author Posted June 7 We often base ourselves in reference to the masters of the instrument to buy
PaulDa321 Posted June 7 Posted June 7 He just plays it in the ad as a sponsorship thing. It plays well as an intermediate instrument, but can be unreliable (reliable for some and not for others). Mine showed up with a leak in the corner of a bellows fold as a new instrument, but it was light and comfortable. I returned it.
Tiposx Posted June 7 Posted June 7 I agree with PaulDa321 there could be many reasons why a top player chooses an "alternative" instrument such as this. Free choice is an unlikely reason.
Accordionne Posted June 7 Author Posted June 7 It is difficult to choose a concertina especially when we have too much marketing that suggests that such an instrument is the best in each category of musicians.
Accordionne Posted June 7 Author Posted June 7 When you see Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh playing on a Phoenix, the temptation is there...lol 1

Accordionne Posted June 8 Author Posted June 8 Yes, that's for sure, but in my humble opinion, it doesn't reflect the reality of the instrument. Marketing question that confuses the true quality of the instrument...
Oberon Posted June 8 Posted June 8 (edited) It's definitely a marketing deal. McNeela is a pretty aggressive advertiser and they often leave out pretty important details that tend to mislead folks into thinking they make most of all of the instruments they sell. Anyway, Caitlín Nic Gabhann did an ad with one of these as well. If someone wants to pay you some money to do a video demonstrating your offerings, it would make sense from a financial incentive perspective to do so. It doesn't mean that Talty or Nic Gabhann would play these boxes or have any reason to use one live. Edited June 8 by Oberon
Edited June 8 by Accordionne
Anglo-Irishman Posted June 8 Posted June 8 And, of course, a virtuoso with a McNeela would probably sound a lot better than me with a Jeffries ... 1
Lappy Posted June 8 Posted June 8 I saved up to buy a Troubadour concertina from Concertina Connection. I had to save up a lot more than the American dollar value because I’m stuck with canadian pesos…… I had it shipped to North Dakota. Then I brought it home to Winnipeg . I was absolutely ecstatic with it and still am today. I know it’s not top of the line but I don’t deserve top of the line . 1 Timothy 6:6 Godliness with contentment is great gain. 4
