Hello,

What do you think of the Phoenix concertina? For the price is that good. I don't want a beginner concertina. Already mastering the diatonic system of the accordion (I know.. it's not comparable but... lol)

Is it worth it for the price?

I am also interested in this conversation. I bought a Wren from McNeela, and 3 years later it's almost ready for the bin. My repair man has had it apart several runs to fix it,  says it not worth 100, never mind 400.....

Looking to spend about 1200, Phoenix looks nice... but once bitten twice shy.

That's why I find out, the body is made in China. I think I'll wait and see if other concertina owners can guide us. It's a huge world in the concertina field, it's easy to get lost, there are so many choices and prices, maybe there's a better quality Phoenix equivalent or should I wait to find an Edgley.

And I don't want to play it full time, it's to vary my repertoire by playing the Hornpipe and Jigs concertina because I play with violinists so I like the sound mix of the two instruments. It won't be my main instrument.

The Phoenix has a lot of twins out there from the same factory, but with different names.

The more reliable equivalent would be the Concertina Connection Minstrel.  I like the shape of the buttons on the Phoenix a bit better, but I’d rather have a reliable instrument made in the US than one of the Chinese ones.  Ive heard somebody say that the Phoenix and its twins may have taken a little too much inspiration from the Minstrel in its design…

Indeed, the American or European bill does not deceive. Thank you for your opinion. It is the budget that deceives the choice...

Why not check out Barleycorn concertinas? Vintage 'tinas brought back to snuff.

I have a lady friend that bought the Wren and found it unplayable. The bellows were so stiff she could hardly get a sound out of it. She now has a Phoenix which has good bellows. I tried it and found the low notes played easily but the high notes required much more force to sound. She will quickly out grow this one. Save your money and get something that is playable long term.
