I still remain surprised that Regondi arranged his concertina music with piano accompaniment, rather than guitar. I think guitar and concertina are great companions

Thanks! It is surprising. I have actually been thinking about this and have a few theories:

 

1) Maybe it was a money thing. The piano was extremely popular at the time, and there were simply many more good pianists than good guitarists at the time (and still today in the "classical" music world). More players = more customers and more performances.

 

2) Maybe he didn't trust the general public's ability to play his guitar accompaniments. Regondi's guitar music is exceedingly complex. I'd argue it's the most complex in the guitar repertoire. Regondi is to guitar as Liszt is to piano, if we were to draw that comparison.

 

3) Regondi frequently performed on both instruments at his concerts, and hiring a guitarist to accompany him but play no solos is awkward (the accompanist *could* play a solo, but two guitarists at one show is unlikely, especially if Regondi has a guitar solo).

 

This is all speculation, but fun to think about.
